The Reds skipper has been cleared of any wrongdoing in court today...
24 Jul 2009 13:10:24
The Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was today found not guilty of affray at Liverpool Crown Court following a row in a music bar in the early hours of December 29th last year.
Gerrard, 29, was with friends at the time of the incident at the Lounge Inn at Southport, Merseyside, when Gerrard and associates clashed with McGee over control of a CD player.
The prosecution had said Gerrard, from Formby, Merseyside, became furious that his request was refused and "lost it", punching Mr McGee "with the style and speed of a professional boxer".
Liverpool captain Gerrard denied affray, saying he believed McGee was about to assault him, and acted in self-defence.
Five of the player's friends admitted affray.
As he sent the jury out, Judge Henry Globe QC, the Recorder of Liverpool, described the events at the Lounge Inn as an "explosion of violence".
