Ramadan Fasting For Real Madrid Trio Lassana, Benzema and Diarra

Real Madrid stars Lassana Diarra, Mahamadou Diarra and Karim Benzema will begin day-time fasting today as part of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, AS reports.

Ramadan runs from 22 August in accordance with the Islamic calendar and participating Muslims are expected to fast froom food, drink and other vices between the hours of dawn and sunset.

Club doctors have designed a special program to keep the players hydrated as training in the intense Spanish summer heat without being able to take on fluids can lead weakness and possiby to serious injury, while some level of weight loss is a normal feature of the fasting process.

Sport reports that Barcelona trio Eric Abidal, Keita and Yaya Toure, all Muslims, will delay their Ramadan fasting to honour their professional commitments with the club.

It's their choice. The Altintop players all fast as well and if you remember years ago Hakeem Olajuwon was criticized for fasting and playing but he would end up playing better during the period he was fasting then before it.

I think alot of people think of the obvious physical factors when fasting, but don't realize that alot of people do it for mental strength, discipline and to push themselves.

Sissoko does it for Juve and ends up playing very poorly and complaining that he is tired.

we have more options in midfield so hopefully someone can take his post until he eats some food.

When I first quickly read the title of this thread I thought it was about Lassana and Benzema fasting while playing and as a result getting diarrhea!!

Good for them. I fondly recall Egypt winning the 1998 African Cup of Nations while fasting.

wow look at this guy. every time a religious person farts he opens 5.4 new threads... and he has the nerve to say this.

anyways i dont get what the big deal is... i always play football games in the morning with no breakfast and only a couple hours of sleep and my stamina is the same pathetic shit.

plus, they could drink/eat those special carb/energy things because they get to break their fast before the games. in fact just khorma and milk would be the perfect pre game food.

Their performance will not be greatly affected. For our soccer team, we have nutritionist who come in and advise us. And they tell us, the food you eat the night before is what is being used for energy during practice. When you eat carbohydrates, it get's stored in your liver as glycogen and it is released during training. So as long as they eat very healthy carbohydrates, like rice, potatoes and pasta the night before, then they should be just fine. The same goes with water...the human body is designed to withhold 3 days worth of extra water, so unless they are in extreme heat, they should not be severely dehydrated. But they should be very cautious.

In fact, our soccer coach does not allow us to get water until the end of practice and only once during practice. We are only allowed to go to the icebox and take one ice cube to put on our lips.

But what about during games? You always see players having bottles of water tossed at them and they take a drink and toss the bottle back. Now they won't have that option.

I'm confused as to why you're defending religious peoples' farts?
