The problem is that it isn't our Team Melli anymore, and it hasn't been for a very long time.

There is so much government interference and BS that has ruined Iran's football. Yes, the players are partially to blame, but the greatest culprits are the regime who have seeked to systematically destroy any progress Iran had made.

Anyway, to answer your question...Iran's team as it is now, would probably have done no better or maybe even lost to NZ in my opinion.

thanks for your contribution to this thread, I haven't seen you post before!
I agree with everything you say. Both teams are, ultimately, very weak compared to other teams that will make the WC. From the Goal article I posted, it seems that NZ is pretty much full strength, and I think it's probably to their advantage to have the return leg at home in NZ.
I can see from your profile also that you live in New Zealand!! How cool! I think NZ sounds like a really great place, I'd really like to visit it some day and maybe spend my retirement years there or something hehe

Bahrain was better, but they played at home so kinda expectable.

I have a feeling Bahrain will make it. They only need to score 1 goal and they'll be as good as through to the WC.
