Brazil forward Ronaldinho named Player of Decade

LONDON (AP) - Brazilian star Ronaldinho has been selected soccer player of the decade by World Soccer magazine.

Ronaldinho finished ahead of Argentina forward Lionel Messi and Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo in the voting.

Ronaldinho, a playmaker for AC Milan, helped Brazil win the 2002 World Cup and Barcelona capture the 2006 Champions League.

The results were announced Thursday and determined by annual votes between 2000 and 2009.

The 2004 and 2005 FIFA World Player of the Year began his career at Gremio in his native Brazil in 1998 before moving to Europe in 2001 when he joined French club Paris Saint-Germain.

After some promising displays in Ligue One, he transferred to Spanish powerhouse FC Barcelona in 2003 following his World Cup victory with Brazil, snubbing Manchester United in the process.

In Catalunya the playmaker shone brightest, leading Barcelona to two consecutive league titles in 2005 and 2006, along with the aforementioned Champions League victory.

After a dip in form and a host of new faces at the Nou Camp, Ronaldinho was shipped to AC Milan in 2008. The Rossoneri have just qualified for the last 16 in this year's Champions League tournament.

It is still unknown if Brazil coach Dunga will decide to keep Ronaldinho on his squad for the upcoming 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

      but retired in 06

ronaldinho had 1 bad year, UNBELIEVABLE 2/3 years, and very good the rest (including now with ac milan). I really like the way these votes were tallied so its doesnt just go to who is fresh in your mind. For example i would have voted for kaka but really he didnt come onto the scene till 04

there should have been a 95-2005 award. that would have been perfect with so many stars. but nobody was consistently good throughout the 2000s.

and there should be a 2005-2015 award because many players would fit that.

midfielders and defenders are so under-rated
Pirlo's passes are still sublime despite him getting older
                  also such a great character

that said: had Kahn been Germany's first choice keeper in the WC2006, he would have won my vote no competition

they are not underrated, even though their play is really important for the team they are less skillful. are you telling me if you put kaka ronaldo zidane in their prime at center mid they wont be able to spread the ball consistently? xavi and pirlo and zanetti and makalele are great... but there is a reason they dont play where messi or ronaldo or zidane plays.

For world player of the year from 2000 to 2009 Zidane won it twice in 2000 and 2003, came second in 2006 and third in 2002. Ronladinho also won it twice and came third once. So although Zidane retired in 2006 the player of the decade should be between these two, since Zidane makes an appearance as a top 3 player in the world for 4 of the 9 years.

Messi and Cristiano should be in the top 5, but Zidane should be second at least, if not first.

because they started playing soccer in different positions

imma the most under-rated team of the decade

so? thats irrelevant. thats like saying "because the grass is green." but i would also say because they dont have the talent. but we are talking about how good the players are in their senior years. btw saviola should be on that team.

depends on how do you defite talent
in my opinion, Pirlo's talent to pick up the perfect pass at the right time is as enjoyable to watch as Messi's talent to keep the ball and dribble past defenders
people tend to like attacking players more, since after all the scoresheet counts

i get what you are saying but i think those attacking players could also play well in the middle, but because they have unique ability to score and dribble they play more upfront... therefore overall they are better.
