LONDON (AP) - Brazilian star Ronaldinho has been selected soccer player of the decade by World Soccer magazine.
Ronaldinho finished ahead of Argentina forward Lionel Messi and Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo in the voting.
Ronaldinho, a playmaker for AC Milan, helped Brazil win the 2002 World Cup and Barcelona capture the 2006 Champions League.
The results were announced Thursday and determined by annual votes between 2000 and 2009.
The 2004 and 2005 FIFA World Player of the Year began his career at Gremio in his native Brazil in 1998 before moving to Europe in 2001 when he joined French club Paris Saint-Germain.
After some promising displays in Ligue One, he transferred to Spanish powerhouse FC Barcelona in 2003 following his World Cup victory with Brazil, snubbing Manchester United in the process.
In Catalunya the playmaker shone brightest, leading Barcelona to two consecutive league titles in 2005 and 2006, along with the aforementioned Champions League victory.
After a dip in form and a host of new faces at the Nou Camp, Ronaldinho was shipped to AC Milan in 2008. The Rossoneri have just qualified for the last 16 in this year's Champions League tournament.
It is still unknown if Brazil coach Dunga will decide to keep Ronaldinho on his squad for the upcoming 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
