The Belgian Football Association (KBVB) has announced that national team coach Dick Advocaat has stepped down from his position as head coach of the Rode Duivels with immediate effect.
The KBVB reacted with surprise to Advocaat's decision, but refused to comment on the situation until they have received further information from the Dutch coach's lawyer.
Advocaat was appointed Belgium coach in October 2009, when he replaced the fired Rene Vandereycken. The former Zenit St. Petersburg coach signed a contract until the summer of 2012.
Only months after his appointment as Belgium coach, Advocaat also accepted a job offer from reigning Dutch champions AZ. The 62-year-old has since combined the two jobs and was expected to fully focus on Belgium again at the end of the Dutch league season.
