Well Portugal is overrated but they just got outplayed by a better Spanish squad. David Villa made Portugal pay but on top of that Spain had I believe like 60% of the possession, and Ronaldo's boys were playing lazy ball.

and 2006 WC was 4 years ago.
alot can change in all that time.
similarlyeverybody was shocked that italy was out early in the WC, but it was no surprise to those who actually were familiar with the italian team.

If you want to mention the other country's leagues, you should also mention Porto winning the Champions League in 2004, and Benfica also winning 2 European Cup's in the past.
They have been consistently good for decades. They may not be an elite team, but they are definitely a top 10-12 team in the world, which would be considered a good team on the international stage.
