some 36-37 years ago there was a youth provincial championship cup played in Iran every year. This tournament was watched by the national team and club coaches to find prospects and also to help them put together our national youth team. There were normally 8-10 teams in two groups of 4 or 5where the top two teams would qualify for the semi finals.
One year I remember Khoozestan had finished first in group one followed by Tehran as the second team. In the other group having already qualified for the semis, Esfahan was playing Azarbayjan to determine who would finish first and who would finish second. Apparently neither team wanted to face the mighty Tehran, so they they tried to lose the match and finish second in their group by scoring own goals. Believe it or not they scored 4 OWN GOALS (2 apiece) before the referee halted the match and the federation disqualified both provinces.
