Qatar would 'welcome' Israel in 2022

DOHA // Qatar would let Israel take part in a World Cup on their territory despite not recognising the Jewish state, the head of the Gulf nation's bid to stage the 2022 event said yesterday. Such an invitation would be unprecedented in the Arab world, in which most countries shun Israel. Hassan Abdulla al Thawadi, chief executive of the Qatar 2022 World Cup bid, said the Muslim state would also permit alcohol consumption during the world's most watched sporting event.
Qatar, like its Gulf Arab neighbours, does not recognise Israel. "All nations participating in the Fifa World Cup are welcome," al Thawadi said, when asked about whether Israel would be allowed to participate if they qualified. If Qatar were to win the right to host the World Cup in 2022 it would be the first time football's greatest showpiece has been held in the region. "We've got a bid that allows history to be made in different aspects like opening up the gates between the East and the West to sit and communicate," said al Thawadi. "There have been previous World Cups where the weather was quite hot and they were able to host a successful event.
"We are looking to develop technologies to address the heat issue, in such a way that utilises renewable energy. "In 12 years' time that technology will be much more developed and the source of energy such as solar energy will be utilised on a commercial basis." The next deadline in the 2022 bidding process is December 11, when bidders must submit a signed hosting agreement. The authorities in Qatar have tightened regulations on alcohol consumption over the last two months in an attempt to stop Qatari citizens, especially young people, from drinking. Qataris are not allowed in bars while foreigners are asked to present their passports or a membership card to gain entry to venues that sell alcohol.
"We are looking at 2022 to be an event mainly for families to attend - on the other hand alcohol will be available in a flexible approach," added al Thawadi. "It will be available to all fans that come to Qatar, at fan zones." * Reuters

A leading international gay rights group demanded an official apology from FIFA on Tuesday following Sepp Blatter’s comment about homosexual fans traveling to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.
The president of the world soccer governing body said Monday that gay fans “should refrain from any sexual activities” during the World Cup in Qatar, where homosexual behavior is illegal.
Juris Lavrikovs, communications director for the European branch of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, said the comments were “very unfortunate and have left people deeply offended.”
“I think they should come out with a strong statement and not just wash it away,” Lavrikovs told The Associated Press. “We are talking about a very basic human right that is being violated.”
Blatter spoke in South Africa on Monday at the launch of a post-2010 World Cup legacy project. He was asked if he could foresee any cultural problems with the tournament being held in Qatar.
“I’d say they (gay fans) should refrain from any sexual activities,” he said, smiling.
“This is not a joke, this is a matter of life and death to people,” Lavrikovs said. “Qatar and more than 70 other countries in the world still criminalize individuals for homosexual relationships, and some countries even punish them by death sentence.
“It’s disappointing to see that an organization that is promoting the game, which in its statutes condemns discrimination of any kind, is coming out with comments like this.”
Qatar beat the United States, Australia, Japan and South Korea in the FIFA vote on Dec. 2 to host the 2022 World Cup.
Concerns have been raised that a country hosting a major tournament has stringent laws that are seen by many to violate basic human rights.
“Sepp Blatter jokes about the risk to gay visitors in 2022, but Qatar’s anti-gay policies are no laughing matter,” British human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said.
John Amaechi also condemned Blatter’s remarks. The former NBA player from Britain who revealed he was gay in 2007 said on his website that “FIFA has endorsed the marginalization of LGBT people around the world.”
Amaechi also demanded an apology from FIFA and urged other associations to distance themselves from Blatter’s comments.
“Anything less than a full reversal of his position is unacceptable,” he said.
Herman Ouseley, chairman of Kick It Out, a British campaign group for equality and inclusion in soccer, said he expected better from someone in Blatter’s position.
“It was all frivolity and laughter but it’s a serious business—people’s existence he has ridiculed,” Ouseley told the AP at the launch of his group’s annual review at the British Parliament.
“We can’t have that from the top of the world governing body—you’ve got to show leadership because you’ve got to influence the standards of behavior required and then you’ve got to enforce it when there’s a failure.”I went to Sharif University. If by 2022 shotor remains as host, and if the below happens, I can see many countries, particularly European ones, boycotting shotor 2022.

The 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar are expected to be staged in the winter rather than the summer, FIFA president Sepp Blatter has revealed.
It has been a talking point ever since Qatar was announced as having won the bid to host the competition over whether it is practical to host a football tournament during a Middle Eastern summer.
Blatter has now admitted that perhaps it isn’t and that we are now likely to see a change in the scheduling for the event.
Speaking from Qatar ahead of the Asian Cup, he said: "I expect it will be held in the winter.
"We have time to look at this question, it is still 11 years away but we must decide the most adequate period for a successful World Cup, which means January or the end of the year.
"Do not forget there is still 11 years to go and although we have the basic conditions of their bid for a June and July World Cup, the FIFA executive committee is entitled to change anything that was in the bid."

That would be so awesome. If the top European teams boycott the WC, it could really F-ck Qatar's shit up. It's no less than they deserve for buying a WC that they clearly don't deserve to host.
Oh yeah, and btw HAHAHAHAHAHAHA 2-0 to Uzbekistan, did you see the Qatari defender's goal assist for the Uzbek's second goal??? lol
