    2006 NFL Draft

    Anyone else in here care?

I think this is a fairly deep draft class. My Washington Redskins don't have a 1st round pick this year, and will probably take either a CB, OLB, or TE with their first pick (2nd round, #53 overall). I wouldn't be upset with TE Leonard Pope out of Georgia, but I'm thinking someone like Texas CB Cedric Griffin is more likely. Interestingly, Boston College DE Mathias Kiwanuka could conceivabley fall to #53. I'd love to have him but I doubt the Skins would draft him after signing Andre Carter in free agency.

These things are almost impossible to predict beyond the first few picks, with trades and all, but here's my 1st round mock draft... Takes a bit more time than one would think, as each pick has a substantial domino affect on subsequent choices. Some teams' picks of course are a bit trickier to forecast than others, particular solid teams that have 3 or so obvious needs. The teams with seemingly no needs and those with a laundry list of them were easiest to forecast, as they usually tend to take the "best athlete available" approach.

There is breaking news regarding the first pick, with Houston signing DE Mario Williams to a contract. I think it's asanine not to take Reggie Bush first overall. I think the Jets may try to move up now and nab Bush in a trade with the Saints. Here's my mock draft:

    1. HOUSTON - DE Mario Williams (GM Charlie Casserly works his magic again)

    2. NY JETS (trade from N.O.) - RB Reggie Bush (And Jets fans are euphoric)

    3. TENNESSEE - QB Matt Leinhart (With McNair about to leave, a QB that can contribute immediately becomes more urgent)

    4. NEW ORLEANS (trade from NYJ) - OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson

    5. GREEN BAY - LB A.J. Hawk

    6. SAN FRANCISCO - TE Vernon Davis

    7. OAKLAND - QB Vince Young

    8. BUFFALO - DT Broderick Bunkley

    9. DETROIT - DB Michael Huff

    10. ARIZONA - OT Winston Justice (Badly need some strong, talented bodies to help Edge and improve that running game)

    11. ST. LOUIS - DB Jimmy Williams

    12. CLEVELAND - DE/LB Kamerion Wimbley (Perfect for Crennel's 3-4 defense)

    13. BALTIMORE - DT Haloti Ngata (Ray wanted some block-eating bodies at the heart of that line, he gets one here)

    14. PHILADEPHIA - WR Chad Jackson (The Eagles have a few needs, but this is the most glaring)

    15. DENVER - WR Santonio Holmes (They traded down to take one of the two standout wideouts, Holmes is the choice with Jackson off the board)

    16. MIAMI - CB Tye Hill (Tough, quick, tenacious cover corner for a suddenly aging and depleted secondary)

    17. MINNESOTA - LB Ernie Simms (Health concerns may turn some teams off, otherwise Simms deserves to come off the board before Greenway)

    18. DALLAS - DE/LB Manny Lawson (The filth get their compliment opposite Ware in a rebuilt 3-4)

    19. SAN DIEGO - CB Johnathan Joseph

    20. KANSAS CITY - CB Antonio Cromartie

    21. NEW ENGLAND - RB DeAngelo Williams

    22. SAN FRANCISCO - LB Chad Greenway

    23. TAMPA BAY - OT Marcus McNeill

    24. CINCINATI - S Donte Whitner

    25. NY GIANTS - CB Ashton Youboty

    26. CHICAGO - WR Sinorice Moss

    27. CAROLINA - LB Bobby Carpenter (There's a vaccancy for a brusing runner but with Davis and Shelton on the roster, the loss of Witherspoon is a more pressing need. RB can be addressed later)

    28. JACKSONVILLE - TE Leonard Pope (One of the toughest picks to project. The Jaguars have pressing needs at TE, OLB, and in the secondary. A multitude of possibilities here with an equal chance of either of the 3 needs being filled. OLBs DeMarco Ryans and Thomas Howard are possibilities here, as are CBs Kelly Jennings and Richard Marshall.)

    29. NEW ORLEANS (trade from NYJ) - C Nick Mangold (OLBs DeMarco Ryans and Thomas Howard are also possibilities here)

    30. INDIANAPOLIS - RB Laurence Maroney

    31. SEATTLE - CB Kelly Jennings

    32. PITTSBURGH - RB Lendale White

5 1st round picks for the Buckeyes, not bad! but man, DeMario Williams first pick??? that's a hell of a shocker, i heard people sayin AJ Hawk being beter than Williams and for him to be picked first overall is shocking to me but defense wins championships and the Texans could use all they can get so that'd be interesting to seehow it works out, i saw on ESPN that all the local call-in shows in Houston hav a lotta angry peeps callin in regarding their pick but i think he'll prove em wrong

Hell yeah I hate the Texans so Im SOOO glad Saints got Bush, just hope they keep him. And my Jaguars got Marcedes Lewis, a TE from UCLA so thats not bad either. I wish it was Lenard Pope instead, and what happened to him by the way? was he even in this years draft?

The texans must have THE DUMBEST MANAGEMENT EVER. If i were a texan fan, I would be SOOOO pissed. And im pissed anyway because the saints are in the NFC south, the same division as my team, the falcons! My two favorite players from the past 2 drafts, Reggie Bush and Cadillac Williams, both went to teams in the NFC SOUTH!

The falcons are probably the deepest team in QB's now with Shockley. It was shocking to see him fall to the 7th round though...(pun intended)

I also cant believe Leinart went tenth, some people had him going 2nd...

          where did lendale white go?

Damn White and Young went to Titans, who are in the same division as my Jaguars! But its ok becuz we dont have to deal with Bush in Houston, thank god! Oh and my boy Utah running back Quinton Ganther went to the Titans also...he's very fast and built, he will become a good player.

                  Grading the 2006 draft

                  Green Bay Packers -- A+
With linebackers A.J. Hawk and Abdul Hodge, the Packers have the beginnings of a defense that could dominate the NFC North for years.

                  Arizona Cardinals -- A
QB Matt Leinart at No. 10 was one of the best value picks because he had the pedigree to be chosen first. The Cardinals got value with each selection.

                  Philadelphia Eagles -- A
The Eagles got defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley and didn't have to move up. They get high value marks for offensive tackle Winston Justice, guard Max Jean-Gilles and wide receiver Jason Avant.

                  Baltimore Ravens -- A-
Typical Ravens draft, as they'll get multiple starters. One of the best picks of the weekend was wide receiver Demetrius Williams in the fourth round.

                  New Orleans Saints -- A-
The Saints were smart to take running back Reggie Bush even though they don't need him. Their other picks were OK, though wide receivers Mike Hass and Marques Colston have potential.

                  Buffalo Bills -- B+
I'd like to beat up the Bills for reaching on safety Donte Whitner, but they redeemed themselves with picks such as defensive tackle John McCargo, cornerback Ashton Youboty and defensive tackle Kyle Williams.

                  Cleveland Browns -- B+
This was a need-driven draft, and the Browns filled their holes. They got decent value throughout the draft.

                  New York Jets -- B+
The Jets reeled in arguably the two best offensive linemen in the draft. They can be second-guessed for passing on QB Matt Leinart and overdrafting LB Anthony Schlegel.

                  Oakland Raiders -- B+
This was a solid draft throughout, with the best value probably being safety Darnell Bing in the fourth round.

                  St. Louis Rams -- B+
The roster is considerably more talented than it was a week ago. Defensive tackle Claude Wroten is a wonderful player, but he was a risk in the third because of character.

                  San Francisco 49ers -- B+
Taking DE Manny Lawson in the first was high in my book, but it was in line with a lot of draft boards. Tight end Vernon Davis should be a star.

                  Atlanta Falcons -- B
Getting cornerback Jimmy Williams in the second round was a nice move. If you considered defensive end John Abraham as part of the draft, the Falcons would get a higher grade.

                  Carolina Panthers -- B
The Panthers had a decent first-day haul. Running back DeAngelo Williams and cornerback Richard Marshall should be able to contribute this year.

                  Dallas Cowboys -- B
Looks like another solid draft for the Cowboys. Taking outside linebacker Bobby Carpenter in the first round should complete the transition to the 3-4 defense.

                  Detroit Lions -- B
The Lions' recent classes have looked better on draft day than during the season, but there isn't much to dislike about whom they took.

                  Kansas City Chiefs -- B
The defensive rebuilding continues, but the offense might be starting to crumble soon. That's why the Chiefs took QB Brodie Croyle in the third round.

                  New England Patriots -- B
The Patriots nicely filled needs with their early picks, but my favorite selections were tight ends Dave Thomas and Garrett Mills in the third and fourth rounds.

                  Pittsburgh Steelers -- B
The Steelers didn't draft until 25th but still ended up with the highest-rated receiver (Santonio Holmes). All in all, it was another solid draft.

                  San Diego Chargers -- B
The Chargers are rolling the dice with cornerback Antonio Cromartie. If offensive tackle Marcus McNeill stays healthy, he should be a starter soon. QB Charlie Whitehurst was a nice value pick.

                  Seattle Seahawks -- B
I liked their second-round pick (defensive end Darryl Tapp) better than their first (cornerback Kelly Jennings), but Seattle should have four starters out of this draft within two years.

                  Chicago Bears -- B-
Return men Danieal Manning and Devin Hester should provide immediate impact. My favorite pick: Defensive end Mark Anderson in the fifth.

                  Indianapolis Colts -- B-
In time, running back Joseph Addai should be a fine replacement for Edgerrin James. The Colts might have taken cornerback Tim Jennings and inside linebacker Freddie Keiaho higher than they had to.

                  Jacksonville Jaguars -- B-
It wasn't a very flashy draft, but it should yield a few starters. The key will be whether second-round running back Maurice Drew can be an every-down back.

                  New York Giants -- B-
I'm more excited about the second-round pick, wide receiver Sinorice Moss, than the first, defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka. The Giants took some chances.

                  Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- B-
The Bucs improved themselves, particularly in Rounds 2 through 5. But they reached a bit to take guard Davin Joseph in the first round.

                  Cincinnati Bengals -- C
They might have taken the best cornerback in the draft in Johnathan Joseph. The Bengals continue to gamble too much on players who are character risks.

                  Miami Dolphins -- C
Safety Jason Allen could be a star if he stays healthy. The team didn't get much after him, though enigmatic seventh-round defensive tackle Rodrique Wright has the ability of a much higher pick.

                  Minnesota Vikings -- C
Outside linebacker Chad Greenway should help, but the Vikings probably could have gotten center Ryan Cook and QB Tarvaris Jackson much later than the second round.

                  Tennessee Titans -- C
The Titans should have taken Matt Leinart, who would have fit well with their offense. They also took a big risk on running back LenDale White in the second round.

                  Washington Redskins -- C
There weren't many picks to work with, but the Redskins did OK getting outside linebacker Rocky McIntosh in the second. Safety Reed Doughty in the sixth was a nice sleeper pick.

                  Denver Broncos -- D
The trade for wide receiver Javon Walker was smart. But they paid too much to get QB Jay Cutler, especially because they need players who can help now.

                  Houston Texans -- D
The Texans really should have taken RB Reggie Bush or QB Matt Leinart with the first overall selection instead of defensive end Mario Williams.

HAHA, lol, i cant believe the Texans did not get Bush or Leinart!

                  Comment

                    #10
The Redskins also spend their 3rd round pick by trading it to the 49'ers for WR Brandon Lloyd. That was a steal! I think they should consider how exactly all of the draft picks were spent when grading the teams, not just tangible picks.
