The prime minister of Qatar, the nation which will host the 2022 World Cup, has admitted he does not understand the rules of football.
Sheikh Hamad bin Jasim al-Thani had been congratulated by British counterpart David Cameron on winning the bid when he made his comment.
The sheikh said: "First of all, I have to admit that I am very weak in the sport so I don't know the rules.
"I like the sport but I'm not involved. I respect that Fifa chose Qatar."
Qatar triumphed after a vote held by Fifa's executive committee on 2 December in Zurich.
After England failed to pick up more than two votes for their 2018 bid, Cameron had described the way world football is governed as "murky".
Cameron is on a tour of the Middle East and was speaking with the sheikh at a press conference in Doha.
