    Maradona to coach Al Wasl

Dubai: Argentina legend Diego Maradona has been hired to coach United Arab Emirates club Al Wasl for two seasons, according to a club official.

Maradona,50, has been out of coaching since the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where he led Argentina to the quarterfinals, and he will take charge of Al Wasl at the start of next season in September, said Vice-Chairman Marwan Bin Bayat.

"Al Wasl Sports Club has become synonymous with achievements of this calibre, and we are very pleased to be welcoming Maradona to a long line of accolades in the club's history," Bin Bayat said. "This partnership embodies the vision of the club as it embraces forward thinking developments in the region to establish unprecedented standards for the sport."

"Maradona is considered one of the wonders of the world, I see him as the eighth wonder," he said.

The details of Maradona's contract are expected be revealed in his presence in the first of week of June.

Bin Bayat said Maradona will work on promoting concepts and professional mechanisms for al-Wasl and to establish unprecedented standards for football in the United Arab Emirates in general.

Al Wasl are currently fourth in the ongoing UAE League with 27 points from 18 games (eight wins, three draws and seven defeats). Al Jazira have already won the title.

I hope they qualify for the ACL and fall into a group with Perspolis or Esteghlal. It will be fun to see people go to Azadi just to see Maradona. LOL

UAE is the most democratic, stable, and westernized country in the entire Gulf region, hence why you see foreigners like to take up jobs there, or Brazil likes to play there, etc. Sort of like the Hong Kong of the Middle East.

Maradona in Al Wasl. This is hilarious. To be honest, I'm so glad that he turned down the TM job. He may have been a special footballer but a coach he has yet to become.
