    Iran world's Greco-Roman champion!

    Sun Feb 20, 2011

Iran's Greco-Roman wrestlers have overpowered world and Olympic champion Russia to crown as the world champion for the second consecutive year.

The Iranian squad downed Russia 4-3 on Sunday at the Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships in Belarus capital, Minsk.

Mohsen Hajipour beat Nazyr Mankiev in the 55-kilogram category, Omid Norouzi overcame his Russian rival in the 60-kilogram, and Saeed Abdevali beat Ambako Vachadze in the 66-kilogram.

In the 74-kilogram, Farshad Alizadeh lost to his Russian rival. Alan Gogaev defeated Taleb Ne'matpour in the 84-kilogram, and Babak Qorbani surrendered to Rustam Totrov in the 96-kilograms.

Iran and Russia had tied 3-3 before the last match in the weight category of +120 kilogram in which Bashir Babajanzadeh won a decisive match to bring victory for the Islamic Republic.

    The host Belarus stood third.

Iran's Greco-Roman team had earlier thrashed South Korea 6-1 in the first clash and hammered the Cubans 7-0 in the second encounter.

The defending champion then trounced Turkey and Belarus 6-1 on Saturday to book a place in the final.

The world's best ten teams participated in two groups in the event. Iran won the Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship for the first time in Armenia last year.

The head coach of the Iranian outfit, Mohammad Bana, had said prior to the games that Iran would defend its title in this edition of the event.

He further noted that the team's priority is to acquire quota places which will qualify Iranian wrestlers for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
