Memphis Grizzlies player Hamed Haddadi, 26, was bound over to a Shelby County grand jury Monday on a domestic assault charge involving his former girlfriend.
Memphis Grizzlies reserve center Hamed Haddadi leaves General Sessions Division 10 court Monday after being bound over to a Shelby County grand jury. He is accused of domestic assault of his former girlfriend last November.
The 7-foot-2 reserve center from Iran was charged in November 2010, along with the girlfriend, Goolnaz "Asal" Karbalaeinematmoeeney, but charges against her later were dismissed. "We believed Mr. Haddadi was the primary aggressor," said prosecutor Karen Cook.
Haddadi has pleaded not guilty to the assault charge. Both he and the girlfriend had injuries related to the incident. She had a cut near her right temple, another on her hand, a black eye and bruising around her neck. She claimed he became enraged when he saw her talking to another man. He claimed she fell out of bed when an amorous attempt went awry.
The couple had been dating for about a year and had previously lived in California.
General Sessions Judge Chris Turner, who had released Haddadi on $1,000 bond, prohibited him Monday from "assaulting, annoying, contacting or telephoning her. That means here or in any other place in this country."
Conditions of his bail also prohibit him from using alcohol or any controlled substances while awaiting the outcome of the case. The charge is a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of 11 months and 29 days in jail and a fine up to $2,500.
Haddadi, who had to stoop to enter and exit the courtroom, was accompanied by his manager, who referred questions to his attorney, Andre Wharton. "We reserve any comment at this time," Wharton said.
