    Press release

Velasco express concern over World Cup schedule

Iran celebrate with their veteran setter Amir Hosseini on the foreground

Iran coach Julio Velasco: "We are very happy for this victory after our 3-0 loss to the United States yesterday. This was important for us. We played with very few mistakes today. Our serving, blocking and defense worked very well. I have been to Japan seven times for competitions and they are always very well organized. But today I have a question for the FIVB and Japan organizers about this tournament. I don't understand why the team who plays Japan in the night match at 6:30PM has to play at 11:00AM the next day. This was a problem for Egypt today. I didn't say anything after we lost in this situation, but I will speak about it now for Egypt. Our team also plays the majority of games at 11:00AM. There is no reason for this. Some of these game could be played at 3:00PM instead, because there is no live TV. Sometimes we have to make accommodations for the media, but this is not one of the times. This is an Olympic qualifying tournament, so all of the teams should have the same conditions. I know all of the people at the FIVB and will talk to them about this issue".

Egypt coach Sherif El-Shemerly: "Today we continued playing very bad. No. 4 (Ahmed Abdelhay) had a small injury to his leg. We continue playing matches every day and the load of travel started to affect the players. We hope to play better in the next matches".

Iran captain Alireza Nadi: "I think Egypt is a good and strong team, but they were tired. Today we played well. I hope we can beat China tomorrow".

Egypt captain Ashraf Abouelhassan: "The problem which Mr. Velasco discussed is a big one for us. We only had 9-10 hours to rest after last night's match. In normal matches it is OK, but it is very difficult in high-level matches. The players would be better with more rest. It was tough to concentrate. Iran played well with fewer mistakes. We are playing nine of our 11 matches at 11:00AM".

Wow, pure class, purely class-act. I wish IPL coaches would read this interview. I am really impressed with the amount of class and dignity this man has displayed throughout this tournament, his interviews and behavior is admirable and to be praised!

Kamran jaan, thank you so much for such great coverage of Volleyball WC!

Wow we're above teams like USA, Cuba, Italy, Argentina etc. Hopefully we will keep up the great performance and qualify amongst the top 3 teams to the Olympics, however should we not manage to achieve that, our boys MUST be applauded and rewarded for their fantastic display!

Keano jan; believe me my friend but I have waited so many years to share such moments with our fans in football but now our volleyball team is doing it. The way they perform, our volleyball deserves much more and from now on we will have better coverage on other sports and teams who do well. damet garm.

I know this may be a stupid question, but how does this tournament work? Is it basically a round robin, and top 3 teams advance to the Olympics??

we lost to the americans cuz they were much more experienced. I think height wise we still have tall players, they might not all be good as far as team melli caliber but there are lots of tall iranian kids now days.

these guys have really impressed me, i had no idea we could go this far...i just hope we beat china and whatever happens next round will be ok, i am proud of them.

The top 3 teams qualify for olympic games but Brazil,Serbia and Cuba are qualified. Its good for us cause Brazil and Cuba have more points than us. So its about Poland, Russia, Italy, USA, Argentina and Our Team. 6 Teams 3 Places

it's good to see 3-0 results (in our favor). It keeps the players fresh for the next game.

Yes you are right. I thought they are qualified because they are the Champions of their continents

For the life of me , I cannot figure out this qualification process and how does it work. Apparently the top 3 teams qualify directly to the Olympics in London , after that I have no clue.

I heard the commentator say something that Iran might qualify as the best Asian team. I am not sure if this was accurate but will keep my fingers crossed.

I watched the recording of the Iran vs. Egypt match. It was a job well done by the boyz.

a straight 3-0 win and one match against China tomorrow. At least that is a decent time , 9 in the morning for us.
