The issue of medals is not really about how big a country is or how well off it may appear. Look at North Korea. They already have 4 or 5 gold medals. We have traditionally been good at certain sports but those are marginalized as the Americans and Chinese are not good at it. One thing about America is they stress on fitness and being in shape. That culture is not really there in Iran.

I think the most important sport is soccer and currently, China sucks big time in it. They didn't managed it do make it trough round 3 with Jordan and Iraq.

Kianoush Rostami will be the first Iranian to win a gold medal!! (hopefully)

EDIT: I just read this on a website, Head-to-Head K. Rostami/S. Moradi. What does that mean? Will one of them get knocked out of the tournament? That is not how weightliftning works, right?

Well, I'm not a football expert either , but I know more about it than rowing for instance.

Indeed, as you said, our events haven't started yet.

Unfortunatley, our events doesn't mean we're a world power in them (like Romania is in Gymnastics, for instance), but the term is used to describe the fact that we actually have a chance, unlike in rowing where our only challenge is to participate.

And, in any case, our events are far, far too few for a country with the population and resources of Iran.

I wish the best for our athlets and I'm not angry with them.
They are doing what they can with the resources provided for them.

What saddens me is yet another proof that Iran is in a catastrohpical state and our sports is just another reflection of that.
KA jaan, actually I'd say we are pretty much a world power in "our events". We have some good contestants for the gold medal in both weightlifting and wrestling.
Look at Turkey f.e. They are pretty much comparable to Iran. Both have approximately the same population (actually Turkey's is bigger), but they are further than us in terms of freedom/democracy etc. Now, how many medals has Turkey gotten in their history other than the usual medals in weightlifting and wrestling?! Well let me tell you: Since 1908, they have had 28 gold medals, and only 1 of them was outside of the wrestling and weightlifting!
Still their overall total of medals is better than ours, but that is another discussion. My point is that some countries are traditionally very good in some sport disciplines, and others at other sports.

We will never become a world power in sports like cycling, swimming, hockey etc. simply because these sports are nowhere near popular in Iran. Iranians only care about football, wrestling, weightlifting, and somehow a bit about taekwando and volleyball. It's just about how popular some sports are in your country.
Persian Pride running through my veins!

          Esteghlal for life!!

We can have two athletes from the same country competing in the same weightlifting competition and they both can medal at the same time. I think we have a very good chance of winning a medal. Sohrob Moradi actually finished first in Asian competition ahead of Rostami. So he may be the one to win a gold or even do better. Rostami won gold in world championship last year but I do not think Moradi was present.

Behdad Salimi will surely get a gold medal too and Sajjad Anoushiravani Hamlabad will probably get silver, who else can get medals for Iran? Especially gold.. I'll be dissapointed if we wont get atleast 3 gold medals
4 or above would be a dream

                              what about taekwondo?
