I don't know about you, but I expect a country of almost 80 mln, with the 17th largest economy in PPP to do much better than this. Why is it that you're so content with borderline failure when our potential is so much more?
What does the economy have to do with it? In that case India must be a massive fail. I think it has to do with the society's intetest in sports.

I do not expect Iran to do well in gymnastics or swimming. Those are not our sports.

We have one world Taekwando world champion. A discus thrower which got bronze in world championship. And Salimi who is also a world champion plus Anoushirvan who is second to him.
When will our world champion Taekwando guy compete? He is fully 100% ok, right? No injuries?? If not he should win it all.

        That's a nonsensical arguement vis-a-vis the Olympics.

The most popular sports in China are Football (soccer) and basketball. Yet they're on top of the standings. I can go down the list of countries and make the same arguement. Also the Iranian society IS VERY INTERESTED in sports.

Here's some data to prove my arguement. I love to see yours.

        Re. economy, here you go.

Taekwando will be on Thursday and Friday of next week.

Sunday, monday, and Tuesday is roman wrestling where we have 3 world champions.

          Salimi will also go Tuesday.

By next Tuesday we should all be happy with Freestyle wrestling yet to come!

Jamaica owns the track and field. You think that has to do with economy? Kazakhstan has 4 golds, what about them?

This is the part that many of you guys are mistaken. Winning a medal in Olympics is completely different atmosphere than in the worlds... plus in many cases other countries do not send their best wrestlers to the worlds for competition... they may send their b or c team... that was the case with Russians team this past year... I will be surprised if more than 2 wrestlers medal for Iran in freestyle and Greco all together.

Kazakhs have a higher per capita GDP than Iran while Jamaica has a lower GDP per capita. Jamaica has yet to register itself on the medal table while the Kazakhs are higher than Iran on the table. So sounds about right. What did you try to prove exactly?

Also don't try to be knit picky here. My arguement is simple: we're clearly underachieving. The money is there, the amateur athletes are there, the interest is there and the only thing that's missing is MANAGEMENT. We're clearly lacking in that department.

Know Iran's history in Olympics before you call this fail and catastrophe.
wow 3 golds is pretty good no? seems gold metals are worth a lot more then silver and bronze

I think Iran's wrestling team is far stronger than you guys give them credit for. I guess we will see next week.

As for economy we have to agree to disagree.

I am not defending the olympic performance, just saying its going to be a lot better than you think.

You guys have to understand how hard it is to win a medal in olympics. Prior to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Hamid Sourian was the world champion and considered the best wrestler in his class... He finished 5th. In our rich history of Wrestling, we have managed to grab 5 gold medals in all of the Olympics since 1948. Below are our Olympic Gold medalists all time:

                        Emam Ali Habibi (1956 Melbourne)
                        Golamreza Takhti (1956 Melbourne)
                        Abdollah Movahed (1968 Mexico City)
                        Rasoul Khadem (1996 Atlanta)
                        Ali Reza Dabir (2000 Sydney)

If I am not mistaken, none of those are in Greco Roman.... So to think that we will rack up gold after gold in wrestling on this Olympic is a bit far fetched.

Even if we had no medals, I am proud of our Iranians showing up for the Olympics and giving it their all. Dameshoon garm and hopefully more medals will fall in place.

I know its hard but have some faith. They can do this.

                                Exactly, Thank you.

Some people do not even appreciate at all. Atleast we got a medal, and although I expected Roustami to get GOLD, it wasn't mean to be. He's young and has more OLYMPICS in him.
I've learnt it's not what you have in your life, but who you have in your life that counts
