I admit: there was extra stress.

    Now, its been relieved

Have a good night everyone and congratulation on Iran's ice-breaking medal.

I think Rostami made a mistake in going for 174 on the second snatch. Should have gone for 173.. If he got that, he still could have gone for 174 on the final attempt. He had done 173 at the world champs but never done 174 in competition before, I dont think. A 173 would have allowed him to win gold with a 212 on his clean and jerk which he could definitely do. Instead, he failed at 174 twice and needed a 214 to win. Obviously hindsight is 20/20 but even before the lift, it seemed like 171-174 was a huge jump. Thoughts?

        Great post Payam Jan.
I've learnt it's not what you have in your life, but who you have in your life that counts

I agree with you, even though I'm not a pro in weight liftnings so I can't be really sure.

Prior to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Hamid Sourian was the world champion and considered the best wrestler in his class... He finished 5th. In our rich history of Wrestling, we have managed to grab 5 gold medals in all of the Olympics since 1948. Below are our Olympic Gold medalists all time:

            Emam Ali Habibi (1956 Melbourne)
            Golamreza Takhti (1956 Melbourne)
            Abdollah Movahed (1968 Mexico City)
            Rasoul Khadem (1996 Atlanta)
            Ali Reza Dabir (2000 Sydney)

If I am not mistaken, none of those are in Greco Roman.... So to think that we will rack up gold after gold in wrestling on this Olympic is a bit far fetched.

damn thats it?? i thought we had more

we didnt get any golds last olympic or before??

Nope Ekbatan jaan... last Olympics was one our worst... We won 2 medals: one gold by Saei in Taek Won Do and one bronze by Morad Mohammadi in wrestling. Compare the 5 total golds in wrestling to our golds in World Championships: Iran has captured 43 total gold medals in world championships since 1969. You can see how harder it is to win gold in olympics compared to the worlds.

The biggest problem with Iranian athletes is their weak mentality, which can only be solved by hiring professional physiologists to talk to these players before important events. It turns out that Moradi wasn't even injured, he simply choked on the big stage. Choking happens in sports, but it happens just too much to Iranians and Iranian teams and the reason is psychological. The two Egyptians, or the Bulgarian, who are considered nobodies in Weightlifting, had more confidence in themselves than the two Iranians who were the two top ranked lifters in the world going into this event, and one of whom was the defending World Champion, and should had been the most confident fellows on that stage, but instead looked full of anxiety and stress, which only means they weren't mentally prepared for such an event.

Irannn jaan I have seen that page... You are right our recent greco results have been fantastic. But Olympic is a different animal. It is the best of the best. All I am saying is we need to be realistic. I hope to see a good showing by our boys in wrestling but we must be realistic.

                      1000000% agree

it was something in their faces i could tell they're not confident....and also the way the coaches or people in iran generally talk to each other is not real encouraging. They have this offensive attitude whether its good or bad......the way iranians encourage each other also sucks....same with our wrestlers, we need foreign psychologists but im afraid there will be language/cultural barriers there too and the iranian athletes might not necessarily relate to them. What we need is a very charismatic and strong personallity type trainer/psychologists that can really push these guys and calm their nerves.

Speaking of weak mentality, do you remember how close Iran's volleyball team was to qualify for the Olympics as the Asian representatives (even winning last year’s Asian Championship and having a solid performance in the World Cup). Somehow they managed to screw up things in the qualification fixtures and had a weaker Australian team advance to the Olympics instead. I thought the players looked mentally weak and it was very sad to see them missing out on the Olympics barely.
