    Pahlevan Alireza Soleimani Passed Away!!!

    extermely sad

Pahlevan Alireza Soleimani, also known as Pahlevan-bashi, Iranain Freestyle Wrestling Veteran and Zurkhaneh's Pahlevan died on 21st May due to heart conditions at the age of 58.
Pahlevan Soleimani is up to today, the only Iranian Wrestler, who won the World Championship in the super heavy weight!
He was also Iran's first World Wrestling Champion after the revolution.

Further Pahlevan Soleimani was also a Pahlevan of Iran in Varzesh Bastani and won the Pahlevani title a record of 6 times! And was honoured with the title; "Pahlevan Bashi".

    May he RIP.

here I post the match, where he won our first Wolrd Championship after 1979 and our only Gold up to today in superheavy weight,
vs the famous US Wrestler Bruce Baumgartner in 1989; look at their shoes and you notice they both have the same shoes. If I am not mistaken, Soleimani damaged his shoes in previous fights and had no spare ones, so Baumgartner gave him a pair of his spare shoes for this fight:

    Khoda Biamorzatesh!

    for those who don't know:

Soleimani enterd his first olympics at the age 20 in 1976. Due to revolution and Iraq war, Iran did not participate in 1984 olympics and sadly due to mis-management his visa was not ready to enter the 1988 olympics, where he was arguably at his prime.
So he enterd at the very old age of 36 the 1992 Olympics (Iran's flag bearer) and won his first 3 matches by technical falls and at that very old age he still managed to get the 5th spot!

Also another funny incident, he was robbed off a win in an international match by the ref. and at the end of the fight in protest Soleimani held the refs hands and raised the refs hand up! LOL risking penalty, which FILA of course could not give as it was obvious Soleimani was robbed.

Those years were exteremly tough for Iranian wreslers, no money, no nothing. As I said earlier, if you look at the below vid, you see Soleimani and Bruce Baumgartner have the same shoes! This is because Soleimani's shoes were broken before the match and he had no spare one's. So, Baumgartner gave him his spare shoes (if I am not mistaken..).

Soleimani was famous for his strength and was regarded as a physically very powerful wrestler.

Very sad news. I was fortunate to meet khoda biamorz Soleimani in person in early 1980's in Lahore, Pakistan during the asian wrestling championship. I recall a funny incident. Soleimani wanted to buy some piegon eggs from the Bazaar. These were some fancy pieogons and apparently Soleimani had the hobby of kaftarbazi in tehran! So, I was kind of his translator to get a deal to buy these eggs. 14 years later, I met him again in Toronto during the world championships in Toronto. I asked him "where the eggs hatched?!!" and he remembered and he said he still had a line of those pakistani pigeons. That was my story with pahlevan soleimani. Khoda biamorzatesh.

              ^

He was such a down to earth man. He was a true Pahlevan.

PS: the reporter makes repeatedly a mistake though, the Championship was won in 1989 not 1988.
