Greece will always be remembered as the Euro 2004 champions, no one will remember how good the likes of Netherlands, Spain and Portugal played at the time!

What do you mean? Up until 2-1 Australia held more than 50% possession. If the other team doesn't have the ball they cannot score. If we play the park the bus method, then it wont be Obi Mikel but the likes of Messi who you need to stop. That's a lot harder. When Australia started to defend and foul (kind of what TM did particularly Teymourian and his fouls) that gave chances to Holland, who of course took advantage and won the game.
At some point we will need to win games to stay in this WC, that's a given.
Similar to what Greece has been doing for years now.

We need to beat them by drawing them out and counter attacking them.

Australia created chances surprisingly easily but you need quality players to finish a team off.
Look, Australia played attacking football because quite frankly their defence isn't so strong to be able to sit back. If they did have a good defence, they certainly wouldn't be as attacking, but since they're hopeless at the back, they just go for it in attack which usually leaves them exposed at the back.
Believe it or not, Iran's attack isn't as good as some you guys think. Our strengths overwhelmingly lie in defence.
So you got to play to your strengths.
Maybe if we played attacking football against Nigeria, we might of still not scored a goal because of the quality of our attackers to be able to finish chances.
We can't play something were not good at.
Regardless of the quality of the opponent, let's compare Iran and Australia's matched thus far.
Australia after two matches of only attack and not much defence come out with 0 points , 3 goals scored, 6 goals conceded; goal difference of -3. Since every other team has + goal differences, Australia is all but out even if they win against Spain.
Iran on the other hand played ultra defensive in their first match. They got a point out of it. A zero goal difference and most importantly a realistic chance of getting through. It's pretty straight forward for them aswell.
I never heard people talking How good North Korea's attack was in the 1966 World Cup because even if they scored the first 3 goals, they lost 4-3 to eusabio's Portugal. They didn't get through, they become easily forgotten.
But when Greece won the 2004 euros with ultra defensive everyone remembers, or when South Korea made the semis of the 2002 World Cup, everyone remembers.
IMHO football is a results based sport, pretty football is risky if your players don't know how to do it. It's safer doing something we know best. DEFEND!

abtin joon by ur recent posts i think ur emotion is getting the best of you which is okay but know that tm is going in to this tourney with a plan! they arent going to play the most beautiful game but they are going for results. i rather we play like shit and make it out of the group then play beautiful football.

Yes at this moment 1 is better than 0, but this tactic that we played vs. Nigeria isn't going to get us to the next round. Just being realistic here, I hope I'm wrong.

Praise the Aussie's all you want and my hats off to them as well. But do you know how many big friendly games Aussies have played leading up to the world cup? They have played Brazil, France, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Croatia just to name a few. Their federation will provide them with anything they need. Of course they will play offensive. CQ is doing the best he can with what he has and it is very smart to close you defense and try to get to the next round. It is good for TM,the fans, Iran, our players and for CQ's resume. In the WC only results matter and I am glad we got a scrappy point and we still have a shot.sigpic

I'm not disagreeing with CQ's tactic in certain games, but if we are THAT worried about making it to the next round that we have to play ultra-conservative, do we really deserve to move on? The issue here is we played a pretty bad Nigerian team so people are excited about getting a point from the opening match. However with that performance we wont be getting points from Argentina or Bosnia. In 2006 we also got a point from Angola. Imagine if we had played Angola first. lol
Hats off to Australia for playing football and trying at least.
