MLS will become a top league in a few years

Andrea Pirlo has revealed that he is considering moving to MLS when his current contract with Juventus expires in 2016.

    http://www.foxsports.com/soccer/stor...om%3Afoxsoccer

there are already players like henry, defoe, di vaoi, michael bradley, lampard, david villa, xavi, etc....going to this league...now pirlo confidently says he will move there in a couple of years.

The teams pay pretty good compared to european teams and there is lots of interest from people in this country. Soon enough good players will be coming here a little sooner than retirement. once the league gets a few more big names like mentioned above, MLS will soon become a top league. it will never be equivalent of EPL, La liga, bundesliga and serie A but it will be probably the 5th best league very soon.

I actually believe their greatness will not come from foreign players but their own domestic base.
Soccer is much more popular now and clubs have decent academies to actually develop and hold onto top players now.
Once the US develops a few elite players of its own more and more will head towards the US.

      yea exactly.

although i think they are still not very close to making a world class star, but they will get there. although its becomign more popular, they still lack the passion and culture of it that has existed in many other countries for decades. their interest is very commercial. not sure how to explain this but they will need the sport to be more widespread like basketball, before they can produce world class talents.

I believe they will have to do away with the designated player and salary cap in place. Once teams can actively spend like in Europe and not worry about exceeding league designated rule players within their roster, the league will explode with talent opting in.

The current N. American sports divisions and playoff structure is also a bit odd and should be done away with as well. Otherwise, they are headed down the right path.

Yeah, bringing a bunch of 40 year old ex star players in to their league will truly make them world class. All of those star players have already peaked, and so will Pirlo definitely after 2016, if he hasn't already. And lets assume younger players will go there (good young players, meaning talents) because of the money they get paid, then they are truly idiots. Who would not want to play in the UEFA CL?

I don't believe they have ever brought in a player who was 40, star or otherwise.

Their biggest problem is that MLS clubs don't play international competition like UEFA champions league (which is the highest level a player can play) or even Libertadores cup.

If USA want more success for soccer, they should participate to every copa america and libertadores cup, against the like of Argentinians, Brazilians, etc...

How can they when they are in a different confederation (CONCACAF)? For now they should focus on winning the Gold Cup (which they have been doing), quilifying for the World Cup (which they also have been doing), and winning the CONCACAF Champions League (which they haven't since 2000). Looking at attendance and media coverage much has improved since say the 90s but there is a long way to go. I remember back in the 90s I had to repeatedly check newspapers for the result of any game the US had played and even then it would normally just be a scoreline.

That is indeed one of the biggest problems, and as KC said, they're not in the same confederation. Therefore the competition on a higher level does not simply exist for these American teams..

For the copa america, they usually invite two other confederations teams (which should always be Mexico and USA in my opinion). Next edition it will be China (why not Iran in that case) and Japan, if I am not mistaken.
For the libertadores, OK it is not easy. but AFC champions league works with a very huge continent so integrating 4 teams from mexico/USA in that competition shouldn't be a big deal, specially when you can see weird move like Australia in AFC, Israel, Turkey, Kazakhstan in Europe, etc...

What you say is correct from the US's viewpoint but would South America want to let them in?

They are coming in at a younger age, closer to early 30s. its a start, u cant just become the best over night.

also MLS teams are becoming competitive with euro teams cuz every summer they are getting the experience of playing against the best.
