what a disappointment. 2nd place is just consolation prize, but all of our wrestlers ended up running out of gas. yazdani was flat out egregious, couldn't even finish his match. tbh if his knee is still that bad from 2 years ago and no one could beat him in qualifiers then iran is in trouble. really poor showing compared to expectations, especially compared to last year and world cup earlier this year.

only guy who was consistent last night was mohammadi. even masoud was rocky from the start. but with mohammadi with those comebacks at this young age/experience i have a feeling he'll become a huge name in world wrestling by next year.

also effing erdogan isn't even turkish, he's a dagestani named ahmedov that the turks bought, just like freaking qatar in soccer.

What a total disappointment for us. It may have been 5 medals in 8 weights but so many of our wrestlers underperformed. Specifically, Rahimi, Emsailpour and most of all Yazdani were flat out complete disappointments. Russia took 5 golds and a bronze in 8 possible medals. They were truly head and shoulders above everyone else. I am very sick of seeing Russia almost always dominate, wrestling has been dominated by for so long minus a few years here and there. We went into this freestyle tournament being favorites in at least 2 weight classes and ended up with no golds.

Really hope we can turn it around later this week when Greco starts.

In which categories do you think we are favorites or at least serious medal threats? Obviously with Sourian and Noorozi we have legit shots at gold. In what other weights are we strong? And which other countries have a shot at winning team title for Greco? Also, it looks like Abdevali isnt participating in this world championships because Asian games kick off 2 weeks later. Its such a shame because I think the world championships are the most prestigious prize after the Olympic games. Isn't this true? I wish we would send our best teams to the world championships every year. You are very knowledgeable about Koshti so I would really like to hear your analysis about Greco coming up.

I don't know if you guys realized, but it was Burroughs' very first international defeat today and his Russian opponent did not spare Burroughs' injured left leg at all. I wonder what our own Takhti would say to this...

Abdevali decided to wrestle at the Asian Games because there are always good prize money for AG medal winners. and he could not make weight twice in less than 10 days.

in Greco this is not our 1st team, 3 of them are from the 2nd team. Ghasem Rezaei lost to another guy in trials (in a very close and controversial match) and he is now #2 in Iran.

59: Sourian, he is a genius but they merged 55 and 60 in 59kg, there are a lot of great wrestlers in this weight, Sourian is the best but still he is not unbeatable. with a good draw he can win the gold, Sourian will not wrestle at the Asian Games.
66: Noroozi is Olympic champion in 60kg, his 66kg results are not impressive so far, he lost to a random Serbian wrestler recently , but he thinks he is in a better shape now. I think he has a good chance for medal but gold will be tough.
71: Biabangard, no realistic chance. he is only here because Abdevali can't
75: Alizadeh, same as Biabangard. we are weak in this weight.
80: Akhlaghi is probably our best chance for the gold, these new rules are perfect for him, he can tire everybody.
85: Karimfar is good but not as good as Nematpour. he has a chance for medal with a good draw
98: Rezaei, you never can underestimate an Olympic Champion but he did not compete at all internationally after the Olympics (except one match in 130kg), he is strong and still can beat anybody but I'm not really optimistic about him, but he had a close match against our #1 in this weight Aliyari, Aliyari just beat the current World Champion from Russia few weeks ago, so Rezaei has a chance.
130: Mehdizadeh, he is not that bad but there are 2-3 wrestlers he will never can beat them. there is a slim chance for him to medal with a good draw. he is #2 in Iran behind Babajanzadeh.

from this team, Noroozi, Alizadeh, Akhlaghi and Karimfar will wrestle at the Asian Games too, Iran won't have competitor in 59kg (per AG rules each country can enter 7 wrestlers), Abdevali, Aliyari and Babajanzadeh will join the team for Incheon.

                    Thanks for all that info!

So what you're saying is that realistically we have a good chance for 2 to 3 medals and best case scenario with good draws we have a chance for 4 medals. If you dont mind can you tell me which wrestlers in each weight class we would want to avoid? I want to know ahead of time so when the brackets come out I can see how hard or easy our wrestlers paths will be.

Also do you think we have a shot at winning team title for Greco? If not, who do you think will win it? Also, do you think if we had our full team with Abdevali, Aliyari and BabaJanzadeh we would be clear favourites for the team title? Also what do you think about some of our number 1 wrestlers skipping the world championships to play in AG for money? Do you think its selfish or not?

I don't understand, wouldn't the world championship be more important than the asian games? i mean yea I'm sure asian games will be easier to win gold...but isn't this the most important competition after the olympics. I can't for that....we need to go young and try to do well like last olympics. i think mohammadi will be a star by olympics and hopefully yazdani fixes his knee soon, doesn't look the same

In wrestling only olympics matter. World champs and world cup ehm not that much.. thats why in Iran, Asian games is nr2. not only for the wrestler that gets more price money from back home but for comitee olympic and all people involved in politics etc. Last few asian games Iran has taken it very seriously and just like wrestling, even weightlifting is more important for them in asian games than in world championships... if i remember correctly behdad salimi will go up again for first time really after 2012 olympics

yes I think winning 2-3 medals including 1 gold is realistic, even though none of them are completely without chance.

we always have to avoid Russia
59: I can list 10 good wrestlers in this weight, this weight belongs to Asia but I'm not sure about Asian wrestlers, some of them won't participate because of the Asian Games. Semenov Russia, Angelov (or Kostadinov) from Bulgaria. Mamadov Azerbaijan, North Korea and Japan if they participate, Modos of HUN, Amoyan ARM and most importantly Uzbekistan wrestler Tasmuradov. this guy is Uzbekistan's best chance for the gold.

66: Kurak of Russia and Aliyev from Azerbaijan are main favorites here. I don't know about Lorincz (HUN) if he participates in this weight (or 71kg). Stabler of Germany.

71: this is a new weight, a little hard to predict but Chunayev from Azerbaijan is clear favorite in this weight, I don't know about the rest. Abdevali could win the gold easily.

75: Vlasov of Russia. Julfalakyan Armenia, Madsen Denmark. the current world champion from Korea won't participate.

80: nobody Bacsi from Hungary is the best of the rest but Akhlaghi beat him 12-4 (or something like that) in a tournament in Hungary. Cebi of Turkey can be dangerous too. Cuba is a bad matchup for him but Akhlaghi's main opponent is himself.

85: there are so many good wrestlers in this weight but Karimfar can beat all of them but they also can beat him ! Tahmasbi Iranian from Azerbaijan, Janikowski Poland, Russia, Belarus , France. Ukraine and much more, this weight is so unpredictable, each year we have new world champion in this weight, last year champion was from Iran but he is suspended now

98: Aleksanyan of Armenia, whoever Russia sends and Kiss from Hungary. this Hungarian guy is a very bad matchup for the Iranians. Turkey is also good here.

130: Lopez of Cuba and Kayaalp of Turkey are almost unbeatable. former freestyle world champion Makhov of Russia just turned to Greco, he is probably good. beside them Mehdizadeh can beat the rest, but Euren from Sweden is also strong.

unlike russia and freestyle, there is no dominant nation in Greco-Roman. I believe our complete team with Bana as head coach can win the title with no problem but at the moment I see Russia as the favorite. team ranking mostly depends on your luck, I mean all of our wrestlers are "at least" good enough for a 5th-7th place finish but they can get a tough opponent in first round. this team had so many internal problems, they changed coach twice this year. I have no idea about the new coach. and the preparation wasn't the best since they had to compete in the trials only 40 days ago. we can have hope because we have so many great wrestlers in this team but I prefer to keep my expectations low.

this is not only their decision, mostly coach's decisions. Asian games is very important for the NOC here and they expect ~10 gold medals from wrestling. in 130kg this guy won the trials (Bashir was absent) and they could not simply ignore him, or in 98kg there is no big difference between Aliyari and Rezaei at the moment. but I think not sending Abdevali was a mistake, he was clear favorite for the gold.

for wrestlers and wrestling community World Championships in 2nd only after the Olympics but national olympic committee cares much more about the Asian Games and since they usually sponsor the national federations, they have to follow NOC orders.

let me correct something, it's not wrestlers decision to decide which competition they want to participate, in Iran it's always coach's decision. this time only in Abdevali's case they let him decide himself.

Wow, I had no idea that the coach determines who gets sent to what tournament. Is there any pressure or movement from Asian countries to move the date of the world championships because it is too close to the AG? Maybe I am just speaking passionately because I am so sad about how dissapointing our freestyle was but I feel like every single world championship we lose out on dominating both FS and greco because our teams are never our 100% top wrestlers because many of our best do not participate for whatever reasons. Also, would you say that most wrestling powers tend to view the world championships as being more important and prestigious than continental tournaments?

Again thanks for the information you provided. I am waiting anxiously on the bracket. I hope Sooriyan can navigate the minefield that is the 59kg class. I am hoping and praying for 2 golds and 4+ medals in greco.
