2. 10 YEARS OLD (2020) - He starts training at his local club and over the next 4 years is winning regional tournaments.
3. 14 YEARS OLD (2024) - Due to his stand out performances he regularly attends his countries centre of excellence for sport receiving top coaching and guidance in all others respects (diet, mental, etc). He also starts competing on the international stage getting all the good exposure that this entails.
4. 18 YEARS OLD (2028) - Attending junior world championships and junior Olympics he starts getting on the podium. Clearly recognised as a top prospect he trains with the senior squad continuing to recieve the best that is on offer in terms of coaching etc.
I hate to bring up Great Britain as an example as there is no way I would expect Iran to compete in terms of funding but for comparisons sake (in terms of the 4 Olympic cycle):
The UK government spent just £5m per year funding Olympic sport before the 1996 Atlanta games. But UK Sport spent £54m on elite sports (i.e. targeting sports they were likely to be competitive in) in the run-up to the Sydney games in 2000 - where Britain won 28 medals and ranked 10th. By the time of London 2012 it was spending £264m, and Britain came third in the medal table, with 65 medals.
So where does that leave Iran? We have seen our national federations unable to send its football team to training camps and secure friendlies against competitive nations. I've not doubt the same applies across the board in other sports.
Does it all boil down to money? Unfortunately, to large extent YES!
However, there can be exceptions to the rule were money isn't the only factor (especially in less elitist sports) and this is what we need to exploit.
IRAN is good at football, weightlifting, taekwondo (lets ignore recent results), karate and of course wrestling (there may be others I have missed). The mullahs and sports ministry need to be pressurised to start supporting our athletes in these sports (perhaps with the exception of football which may be better able to sustain growth without government). Now I realise I am expecting too much but hey we can all dream!!!
I mentioned in another post I'd love for us to set up a centre of excellence. Would love to see wealthy ex pats (Moshiri I'm talking about you) help set this up.
