    WC 2016 Karate

Iran killed it again and won 2nd straight WC gold!

    #2
That was the 2nd straight "team Kumite" gold in addition of two gold and three bronze medals in individual Kumite events which made this WC the best ever for Iran with 6 medals and 3rd place in medal table.

and remember Karate will be included in 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. so that was a great result.

We became 2nd in Men's Karate and 3rd in total. Amazing performance. With Karate we can get at least 1 extra gold in Olympics.

Judo is probably the only orient combat sport we are not world class at. We have only had 1 person in history (Miresmaeili) who got gold at world champs.

We do have a bright talent though. A 17 year old who got gold in youth Olympics but the federation has left him with no support and he was last seen working at a restaurant as a dishwasher!!!

Don't know anything about him or how good he is ... maybe others here will know:

Zareian named Iran judo national team head coach

It’s his second stint in the national team.

Zareian was coach of Iran national team but was dismissed from his job ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games.

Newly-appointed Iran judo federation president Mohammad Derakhshan has chosen Zareian as new head coach of the national team.

The federation is going to hire a foreign coach as Zareian’s assistant as well as a foreigner as head coach of Iran’s women team.

We had our golden era in Judo until 2008 but then IJF changed the rules and their change totally changed everything for Iran. this plus mismanagement in Iran Judo Federation turned Iran from a superpower in Asia to a below average Judo nation.

from 2000 to 2008 we had 5 fifth-place finishes at the Olympics from 5 different athletes, Miresmaeili 2000, Miran and Akhondzadeh 2004 and Maloumat and Roudaki 2008 which means we were only one win away from an Olympic medal 5 times ! and our best chance for an Olympic medal (probably a gold ) was Miresmaeili in his prime days in 2004 , when he was the the two time world champion but he got Israel in 1st round !!

about the rule changes, our judo lies with our wrestling but since 2008 IJF made attacking directly to the leg illegal, means if you touch opponent's leg with your hands you will be disqualified , I mean not just a warning but disqualification !

It will be individual Kata and 3 individual Kumite weights for each gender, means 8 events in general.

not confirmed yet but 67, 75 and +75 for men and 55, 61 and +61 for women are in WKF original proposal, still have to be confirmed by IOC.

beside that from what I read in their proposal, their qualification process will be brutal. since they will be only 10 athletes in each wight, you have to be in top 4 in world ranking to qualify directly otherwise our country (like any other country) can't qualify more than One athlete !
