Hockey will be an amateur competition this time, NHL didn't allow pros to join it, Europeans are big favorite, Canada and USA will have a really crappy squad lol

Exactly. We have 1 less participant compared to 2014 olympics

        - Mohammad Kiyadarbandsari (Alpine Skiing) : Men's giant slalom / Men's slalom
        - Forough Abbasi (Alpine Skiing) : Women's giant slalom / Women's slalom

        - Seyed Sattar Seyd (Cross country skiing) Men's 15 km freestyle
        - Samaneh Beyrami Baher (Cross country skiing) Women's 10 km freestyle

Man winter Olympics are so lame. So few countries participate and I can never look forward to Iranian medals during the winter Olympics. Hopefully the next 2 weeks come and go fast and the focus can be placed back entirely on the World Cup.

Our only chance to win a medal at the Winter Olympics (or even being competitive ) is hoping for "Ice climbing" to make it into the Olympics. we have world class athletes in this sport and that was one of the candidates for the next Olympics (2022 China) but didn't make it
so maybe for 2026 ! lol

But climbing was added to the 2020 olympics. It will be the "vertical triathlon" which includes speed, sport, and bouldering. Not sure how he is at the other two, but Reza Alipour (Persian Cheetah) is one of the best in the world at speed climbing. He is the WR holder.

Also, Karate was added to 2020 Olympics, and Iran has a good chance to pick up some medals in that sport as well.

well I'm well aware of that, here I was talking about "Ice climbing" that's a different sport, a winter sport.

what you wrote about is "Sport Climbing" and unfortunately it will be hard almost impossible for Alipour to even qualify for the Olympics. (we stll don't know the qualification format though) let alone winning a medal. this "combined event" is more good for lead/boulder specialists. Alipour is specialist in Speed. I never heard he even compete in Lead or Boulder events.

btw Speed event is added into the 2018 Asian Games program. we will see him in Jakarta as the main candidate for the gold medal.

If we want to developp winter sport, We should give priority to :

                      - our skiing. We have nice mountains but we lack support and infrastructure.
                      - sports like curling, skating (like holland and South Korea), why not Ice hockey.

in Winter sports, we should see more women aswell as they need to be fully covered anyway in the cold.

However, due to lack of money, Iran should invest more in sports with high coverage and impact like football, tennis, cycling, basketball, volleyball, handball, track&fields, formula 1 etc...

Iran should send a few athletes to Norway to receive training for the 2022 Olympics. Those same folks can later develop good domestic programs for winter sports.
