I can confirm this. The russians are crazy about Ice.Hockey. The same for Belarus.
I just don´t know if Ukraine, the Baltic Countries and countries like Uzbekistan have the same fire for the sport.

You can't compare soviet countries to Iran, we are talking about the nations which hockey is the first sport in many of them, the culture has been there for so so many years, so the desire at least is there, which is not the case in Iran.

Absolutely, at first a lot of work will have to take place to organically grow interest in the sport.
Slowly they are doing things such as showing NHL games, or holding introductory skate classes... but we need lots more infrastructure, and money!

Honestly, I don't even know how Canadians can justify this sport. I know there are people who send their kids (elementary and high school aged) to private hockey schools year round for tuition fees of $50,000 plus!

They're even making soccer expensive here.

There are lots of NHLers who actually came from poor families, but in many cases the supports from different organisation are there when parents can't financially support their kids, and from the moments the scouts see some talents from even kids between age of 13-15(Midget AAA, etc), there will be lots of sponsors around them. These days a 14-15 years old kid who has a shot to play even junior hockey will have an agent.

The Former USSR in Europe: Russia, Belarus are big powers. Ukraine and Baltic States, Moldova, Georgia and Armenia are good too. Azerbaijan does not have a national team although it has an Ice Hockey Federation maybe they administer some invisible teams

The Former USSR in Asia: Kazakhstan is a giant and participates in World and Asian Championships. Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan have been rising through the divisions in Asia. Uzbekistan does not have a national team although they have a club Binokor Tashkend who won some tournaments in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and UAE most recently they won UAE's President Cup in December 2017. Tajikistan does not have a national team and are in the same situation as Iran with regards to domestic development.

This is Uzbekistan Hockey's intagram https://www.instagram.com/uzhockey88/

            This is about Tajikistan http://www.eurohockey.com/article/47...ajikistan.html

Even Iranian players in Europes 2nd leagues won't come to Iran - lots of those leagues are filled with prospects that have been or will be drafted to the NHL in 2nd round and onwards. Not weak leagues by any stretch especially compared to the skill level in Iran.
