We won 21 gold medals in Incheon. this is their list and what happened to them this time
Esmaeil Ebadi (Archery) - his event was dropped from the program. competed in team event instead and got eliminated
Ehsan Haddadi (Athletics) - Gold medal
Mohammad Daneshvar (Cycling) - Got eliminated in 1st round, finishing 13th !
Amir Mehdizadeh (Karate) - Silver medal
Saeid Hassanipour (Karate) - Retired, his replacement Askari won the gold medal
Hamideh Abbasali (Karate) - Bronze medal
Mohsen Shadi (Rowing) - 5th place
Najmeh Khedmati (Shooting) - Didn't make the team for her favorite event. competed in mixed team event and finished 7th.
Farzan Ashourzadeh (Taekwondo) - Bronze medal
Behnam Asbaghi (Taekwondo) - Not in national team anymore, almost retired, his replacement Bakhshi won the silver medal.
Masoud HajjiZavvareh (Taekwondo) - Retired, his event was dropped from the program
Mehdi Khodabakhshi (Taekwondo) - Eliminated in first round
Volleyball national team - Gold medal
Behdad Salimi (Weightlifting) - Gold medal
Masoud Esmaeilpour (Wrestling) - his event was dropped from the program
Meisam Mostafa-Jokar (Wrestling) - Retired, his replacement Yazdani won the gold medal
Reza Yazdani (Wrestling) - Not in national team, his replacement Karimi won the gold medal
Parviz Hadi (Wrestling) - Gold medal
Habibollah Akhlaghi (Wrestling) - Retired, his event was dropped from the program
Mehdi Aliyari (Wrestling) - Missed the national team trials because of an injury, his replacement Heidari finished 5th
Mohsen Mohammadseifi (Wushu) - Gold medal
interesting thing that I didn't notice before. 4 out of 21 events we won the gold last time were dropped from the program thanks to Indonesia ! in other hand only two of our 20 gold medals from this current edition came from "new events" in Sport Climbing and Kurash. so changing the program hurt us at least in term of gold medals.
only 5 of them, Haddadi, Mohammadseifi, Salimi, Hadi and Volleyball NT managed to defend the AG title and in two cases they were replaced by another athlete who won the gold medal. so we could defend only 7 out of 17 (21 minus 4) gold medals we won last time.Comment

Seems like we had bad performances in Taekwondo and Karate compared to last time. It’s still impressive that we managed to win 13 golds in events that we had not won before. If we had continued from last time we could’ve had a record breaking games.Originally posted by Irannn View PostComment

4 years ago Karate wasn't an Olympic sport. you know the day Karate made it to the 2020 Olympics (still not a sure thing if Karate stays after that) the level improved in this sport globally. it's more difficult to win medal in Karate in 2018 comparing to 2014. but let's not forget this time all of our 8 Karatekas managed to win a medal. last time we won 3 gold medals, this time 2. but I believe we could win 6 ! Mehdizadeh got robbed big time in the final, that was blatant cheating. I also heard the same about Poursheib's semifinal (the match had no TV coverage) even though in this case Poursheib still had to beat his main rival Araga in the final. so let's say our men's team could finish it with 3 gold and 1 silver. I also see improvement in the women's side. last time Abbasali won the gold, she almost defended her title in Jakarta. she was in control against her main Japanese rival (who is a world champion) but just lost her focus in last 10 seconds and lost it. she beat the same Japanese girl 1 month ago in Asian Championship. I also think Pegah Zangeneh was better than everybody else in her weight class. she was a bit conservative in her first match which she lost on Hantei (referees decision after 0-0) still 2 out of 5 refs gave it to her, but 3 to the Kazakh girl. that Kazakh girl won the gold medal and Zangeneh dominated the rest of her opponents to win a bronze. also Khaksar and Alipour both won silver medal. I think our Karate looks good for the long road of Olympic qualifiers. with only 6 events available for us to qualify (as we know we are not good in Kata) I hope we can qualify at least 3 or 4.
but taekwondo, we knew we are weaker this time. since 2016 we got bad results in Taekwondo. and beside that the organizers made some changes to the program. until 2014 we had 8 weight classes and each country could enter 6 athletes. so two of our athletes (Asbaghi and Ashourzadeh) won the gold medal without facing Korea. but this time we had only 5 weight classes and 5 quotas. all of our athletes had to go through Korea to win the gold. Rajabi and Hosseini managed to do that while Khodabakhshi and Bakhshi lost to Korea. (Farzan lost to Uzbekistan) I think considering the situation they did well. and I also think the officiating wasn't fair in 68kg final, Amir Mohammad Bakhshi almost beat the Korean legend Lee Dae-hoon but refs gave so many cheap punch points to the Korean guy and killed Bakhshi's momentum. but while Bakhshi, Hosseini and Rajabi were great, our veterans (those are still young) Ashourzadeh and Khodabakhshi failed big time. obviously we need new blood in taekwondo. just for info in last World Junior Championship, Iran won 7 out 10 gold medals !!!!
but our women's taekwondo team was a huge failure here. only one bronze is a very bad result. this is what we had 16 years ago !! and they didn't even lost to Korea, they mostly lost to average athletes like Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan. I think they need to replace the coach, this is Alizadeh's childhood coach, just because one of her girls won an Olympic medal doesn't make her suitable for this job. Iran got very good results in Youth/Junior competitions but I don't know why those girls can't repeat those results in senior level. for example Zahra Pouresmaeil is a world junior champion. she beat the Olympic Champion from China few months ago in Asian Championships but here she was miserable and lost in the first round.Comment

Our real athletes did fairly well, the rest were etelahati frauds who signed up for random sports just to make their way to Jakarta, where they could surveill all of our real athletes.
This explains why we sent the highest number of athletes ever to the Asian games, and yet had an overall mediocre to poor result. Under IR we have never managed to gain near the same amount of medals as we did under the Shah, eventhough Iran was in its infancy in most sports back then.Comment

Saeid Mollaei just won Iran our first gold medal in Judo world championships after 15 years!!! Huge day for Judo. Hope he can repeat it in Tokyo 2020.Comment

Yes they are and we could have more medals by now. we were very unlucky in futsal. getting a very hard draw. and then losing to Russia in the very last minute. in Taekwondo we deserved 6 medals and not just 4. two of our athletes got robbed blatantly. in shooting both of our boys finished first in qualification with VERY good records (which could enough to bring them to a senior Olympics final) but they both blew it in the final.Originally posted by GoIran View Post
we also won a historical unexpected medal in Gymnastics. but the highlight of the competition for Iran was super heavyweight weightlifting. when 15yo teenager Yousefi own the gold and beat opponents 2 years older than himself. his records are much much better than likes of Salimi or Rezazadeh when they were at his age. he is only 3kg behind the World Youth Record and he still has 2 more years left to compete in Youth level.
btw the only remaining medal chance for Iran is in Karate. we have 5 athletes all of them with medal chance.Comment
