but we know there are only 2 events left for him (or any other Iranian Weightlifter) to add more points, that Colombia event and also Asian Championships. but the thing is Colombia is very close to suspension from the Olympics Weightlifting, I'm not sure if they host that event if they can't qualify themselves ! and we also know how tournaments in Asia are getting cancelled left and right.
right now the only Iranian weightlifter who fulfilled all requirements to qualify for the Olympics is Ali Davoudi. we also have Ali Hashemi in a good position but he needs just one more event to finish his 6th required event. but maybe some people like me even prefer he doesn't ! because if he qualifies directly (and we know he has no chance for medal) that will tie our hands for re-allocation at 96kg. even if Moradi/Rostami don't qualify directly there is still a good chance that countries above them decide to send someone else in another weight and the quota goes back to Iran, but if we confirm 2 weightlifters already (Davoudi and Hashemi) that won't happen.

Iranian media are reporting that Hamideh Abbasali is qualified for the Olympics in Karate. actually it's not 100% yet. even though I have to say she is 99% there. she will qualify for sure if she wins the final tomorrow.
this weekend we have the penultimate round of Karate ranking series events. I will write in detail about our chance tomorrow after the finals but Abbasali had a great tournament , she made it to the final and almost guaranteed herself an Olympic quota. despite early elimination of Sara Bahmanyar, she is still in a good position to qualify. with Bahman Askari (already qualified) and one quota at +75kg (either Ganjzadeh or Poursheib) we will probably qualify 4 in Karate which is a great result in my opinion. we still have a slim chance for the 5th quota by Rozita Alipour. of course there will be one last chance for everybody in last chance Olympic qualifier.

Hamideh Abbasali confirmed her Olympic quota by winning the gold medal in penultimate K1 event. but then a terrible thing happened, she got seriously injured in last 2 seconds . she is in hospital right now, we will know how serious it is very soon but unfortunately that looked serious to me. I really hope she is fine, she is a gold medal candidate.
only two events left, 1 global and 1 European Championship. and unfortunately with spread of this coronavirus cancellation is always possible
right now we qualified 2 (Bahman Askari and Hamideh Abbasali) , 3rd quota is also confirmed but there is a battle between Poursheib and Ganjzadeh for that quota. right now Ganjzadeh is in a better situation.
Sara Bahmanyar is currently 2nd in his weight class (top 2 qualifies) she has something like 1100pts advantage over 3rd and 4th. they are both European and still can catch her. she can confirm her quota if she equals the result of those 2 athletes in the final tournament. (or gets a better result) the situation looks good for her but far from 100%.
another Iranian athlete still alive is Rozita Alipour, but her chance is slim. she needs to win the gold and also needs some other results to qualify directly. even if she doesn't qualify directly she still can improve her score and qualify later as "Asian Quota"

our water polo team is eliminated from Olympic qualifiers without playing a match ! since Kazakhstan didn't want to host the Asian qualifiers, they cancelled the event and decided to consider results from the last official tournament in Asia which was 2018 Asian Games and gifted the quota to Kazakhstan !! of course Iran protested a lot but apparently this is official now
and keep in mind, they took this decision before the outbreak of coronavirus in Iran, I never saw such a thing, and right now so many sports are struggling to find host for their Olympic qualifiers but none of them are considering "cancelling" the event and just gift the quota to someone.

Asian/Oceania Boxing Qualification tournament is ongoing in Jordan,
We sent a complete 8 man team, 3 of them (including our veteran Ehsan Rouzbahani) are already eliminated, the rest 5 reached the quarterfinal and all of them are just one win away from the Olympics. Asian quotas are different in those weights, 4 of our boxers will have a second chance in repechage if they lose their QF. here is the list of our remaining boxers
52: Omid Ahmadi-Safa, beat Iraq will face Olympic Champion from Uzbekistan in QF, 6 quotas available in this weight
57: Danial Shahbakhsh, beat Chinese Taipei and Papua New Guinea and will face Kazakhstan in QF, 6 quotas available
63: Ashkan Rezaei, beat South Korea and will face Kazakhstan in QF, 6 quotas available
75: Shahin Mousavi, beat Japan and will face China in QF, 5 quotas are available, if he loses QF he has to win two bouts to qualify
91: Toufan Sharifi, beat China and will face Uzbekistan, 4 quotas are available, he has to win the QF
unfortunately 4 of our boxers will face Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals ! they are the most strong countries in the world in this sport, the last time one of our boxers beat these 2 countries were probably 10 years ago. still for 3 of them it's possible to continue in repechage, 6 quotas are up for grab in 3 lighter weights, Ahmadi-Safa, Shahbakhsh and Rezaei need just one win to qualify, either in QF or in repechage. for Sharifi at 91kg, it looks almost impossible, QF is do or die for him. but our best boxer is Shahin Mousavi, he has to beat China to qualify, he beat this guy few months ago at the World Championships and he knows this is almost do or die for him too because if he loses he has to face the loser of UZB/KAZ bout in the repechage.
before the event I was hoping for 1 or 2 quotas, mostly from Mousavi and Rouzbahani. but right now 4 of our boxers have realistic chance to qualify. I still hope 2 of them make it . 19 years old Shahbakhsh from Sistan & Baluchestan was our most impressive boxer, I won't be surprised if he even manages to upset that Kazakh boxer.

Iranian media wrongly reported few weeks ago that Iran is qualified in fencing. that was a mistake but now I can say Iran is 100% qualified in men's team sabre. there is still one world cup left but Iran already collected enough points. we won't even participate in the last world cup.
just for info, there are 3 weapons in fencing, Epee, Foil and Sabre, we are only good in Sabre and that's where we are qualified. with having a full team, all of our 3 fencers can participate in individual event as well. some countries will be allowed to have a 4th fencer as reserve but I don't think that will apply to Iran, which means we will have 3 fencers in Tokyo, Mojtaba Abedini and Ali Pakdaman are guaranteed a place, the last place will be between Mohammad Rahbari and Mohammad Fotouhi.
there is still a small chance for Iran to qualify in other weapons too. team quotas are out of reach, but 1 quota is available in continental championships for each weapon.

nothing changed since then, he is still training alone in Tehran, waiting for confirmation about his next competition. the Asian Championship is now cancelled but he (and other Iranian weightlifter) will be allowed to participate in other continental championships. he is supposed to also participate in Colombia event later in march but with this Coronavirus nothing is 100% these days.
in short, Moradi needs a big result and a bit of luck to qualify, for Rostami he needs more than that, he needs a miracle.

at the end of Asian/Oceania boxing qualification tournament quarterfinals. let us take a look at our chances, all of our 5 boxers lost their QF but 4 of them are still alive in the repechage.
Toufan Sharifi at 91kg is eliminated , no repechage in this weight, to me Mousavi at 75kg got robbed against China but then he had a huge win over Uzbekistan few minutes ago keeping his chance alive, since only 5 spots were available in his weight, he had to win 2 bouts to qualify. our other 3 guys only have to win their next match to qualify. all of these decisive matches will be on Wednesday.
52kg: Omid Ahmadi-Safa vs Australia
57kg: Danial Shahbakhsh vs Hong Kong
63kg: Ashkan Rezaei vs Tajikistan
75kg: Shahin Mousavi vs Mongolia
I believe Shahbakhsh and Mousavi are huge favorites, I also think Ahmadi-Safa is better than that Australian guy. Rezaei didn't impress me at all today and it was one-sided defeat and he has to face the Asian Champion from Tajikistan, I don't count much on him. I will be happy with 2 quotas, 3 will be a great result.
