in Karate, whoever qualifies from Iran will be a gold medal favorite . I really hope we qualify 3-4 at least. but results in Karate are random so you never know.

in taekwondo, Khodabakhshi has absolutely no chance to qualify. we better focus on 58, 68 and +80. right now Hadipour, Hosseini and Mardani are our candidates to qualify. we will have the World Championships very soon which will be the main event for the qualification.
Damn. I forgot he has to wrestle in 97. In that case I agree it will be between Sadullaev and Synder. What a pity we have two of our great wrestlers in this competitive weight!

Sad state for our Taekwondo. Who would have thought in 2014-2015 that the "Tsunami" and the "Terminator" would have such downfall that they can't even make the next Olympics.

i just remembered I forgot to list Saeid Mollaei as a gold medal chance. That is if he doesn't face Israel for the 100th time!!

Ehsan Haddadi became the second Iranian athlete qualifying for the Olympics.

the qualification window for Athletics started from 1 May and Ehsan achieved the qualification standard in the first tournament. the qualification mark was 66m and Ehsan threw the discus 66.78m in first round of Diamond League in Qatar and won the bronze medal.

Yes i agree it will be difficult to get a medal, but imo reza should also do bouldering, he's got nice explosive power and surely has the finger strength to compete. on another note, our womans climbers had 1 girl in the world cup competing in bouldering and got 9th.. thats sick, i forgot her name but she will get there soon enoug!

It's not just difficult. it's simply impossible. none of the speed climbers even try this "combined event" that's just good for lead and bouldering specialists because these 2 events are a bit similar.

and btw for that reason, they are going to add speed event into the 2024 Summer Olympics. I wonder if Alipour can keep himself in high level for that long. he is already getting weaker not winning a medal in first 3 World Cups this season.

that girl is Elnaz Rekabi. she also finished 7th at the Asian Games and narrowly missed the final on tiebreak. she is our only climber with a realistic chance to qualify for the Olympics. no chance for an Olympic medal. even qualification will be a big achievement. unfortunately she is weak in speed.

We were just one touch away from a historical medal in Fencing in Rio 2016. we are still good in Fencing and still there is a slim chance for medal. probably more than 2016 because this time we will have "Team Sabre" event in the program as well. with only 8 teams qualifying, if we qualify there is a chance for medal. beside that we will qualify 3 fencers in the individual event as well.

the qualification for team events in fencing is only based on the world ranking. top 4 qualify directly + next best from each continent. and with South Korea most probably (almost a sure thing) finishing in top 4 we only have to stay ahead of China and Japan to qualify. right now we are 5th while China is 9th. but points we collected so far don't matter at all. the qualification period just started. still our current ranking helps us a lot to have easier opponents in upcoming tournaments. we can make it to top 8 relatively easily as long as we are 5th or 6th.

here is the list of ranking events for men's team sabre in one year qualification window, at the end. results from the World Champs, Asian Champs and 4 best results from 5 World Cups will be counted for the ranking.

World Cup - Madrid (Spain) - May 10-12
Asian Championships - Tokyo (Japan) - June 13-18
World Championships - Budapest (Hungary) - July 15-23
World Cup - Algiers (Algeria) - November 15-17
World Cup - Warsaw (Poland) - January 10-12
World Cup - Padua (Italy) - March 6-8
World Cup - Budapest (Hungary) - March 20-22

I remember the excitement and stress that night. Abedini was 14-13 ahead and needed a point to reach the final. I think he was robbed, he clearly touched the american twice when he was on 14 and they didn't give it to him. Hope our fencing can get their deserved medal this time.

completely correct! i wish reza would try bouldering and lead too.. he's got the power! but power only is not enough. i have a feeling he's not focused enough but he still has it inside of him, 5.5 something i saw in his semi final past weekend.

Relatively good start for Iran Sabre fencing team in first World Cup inside the qualification period.

Iran finished 5th in the World Cup. beating Georgia 45-41, losing to Russia in QF 45-35 and then they beat USA 45-38 and France 45-40 to finish 5th and collect 32pts in the ranking. Iran's main rival China finished 10th with 24pts.

the next two events are the most important ones. Asian Championship in June and World Championship in July. Iran most probably will face China in the Asian Championship semifinal which will be very important. World Champs is also important because it has more value and gives more points.

Israeli sites report that Iran judo federation and olympic comity had a deal where iranian judoka wouldn't withdraw against Israeli opponents.

I think that's just a misunderstanding from International Judo Federation.

here is the letter from Iran Judo Federation and the Iran NOC to the IJF
                      https://www.ijf.org/news/show/histor...y-ijf-and-iran

it doesn't say "we are sorry we won't boycott Israel anymore" it's more sounds like some kind of nonsense to buy time. they will be more careful probably to make up better excuses for withdrawing.

and the bad news is an Israeli guy won the 81kg gold medal is recent Grand Prix event. very bad news for Saeid Mollaei who is the current World Champion in this weight.

UK embassy in Iran disgusts me. Taekwondo world championship has started today in Manchester and they still haven't issued visa for our best medal chance who is supposed to be on the mat tomorrow. The rest of the team only got their visas today or yesterday. It will heavily affect our results in this competition and thus their chance to go higher in ranking and qualify for Olympics.

Actually if you check the World Ranking, only 3 Iranians have a chance to qualify for the Olympics and all 3 of them denied/delayed visa !!! interestingly only few months ago they were in Manchester for the 2018 World Grand Prix !
Hadipour and Mardani got their visa very late, I hope it doesn't affect their results but as you said Mirhashem Hosseini denied visa and now it's a sure thing he will miss the World Championships. now he is really in trouble to qualify for the Olympics. this was the main qualification tournament, we have to pray his main rivals fail to medal here and then they have to send him to all other competitions to collect points.

this is his instagram, very sad
                          https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxe3Vfwl8iv/

on other hand, another star is born in our taekwondo, 17 years old Mahla Momenzadeh made it to the semifinal in women's 46kg and secured at least a bronze medal. only Kimia Alizadeh had won medal in World Champs before (1 silver and 1 bronze) Momenzadeh now becomes the second Iranian girl doing that. I hope she doesn't stop with bronze medal and wins the gold medal here.

Unbelievable performance by our teenage girl. She has a tough final against Korea tomorrow but she has the potential to get our first ever female gold.

I am still furious about what happened with Mir Hashem. How can you do this to someone's life and career on purpose and sleep at night??
