Why is our handball so messed up? It has the most amount of legionaries in top teams among all our sports and yet we can't even have our full squad for Olympic qualifications. What a pity for this golden generation.

Handball Olympic qualification starts in a few weeks time. Only the Asian champion will directly qualify to the Olympics. We are in the group of death with S. Korea, Bahrain and Kuwait and yet our federation hasn't managed to get our star players to join the national team from their European clubs. Even though it is an important tournament in the world calendar.

Sajjad Esteki is one of the world's top players at his prime and he won't be there. Same with Norouzinejhad, Samsami, Mousavi and our legionnaire goalkeeper. We won't even go past our group with the invited squad!!

Sadly as long as Top Priority in Iran is Palestine (a nation of traitors who continue to eat up Iran's wealth and resources, then continue betraying Iran), there is no hope for Iranian people in life not just sports.

I don't think they can win back to back medals to qualify but at least on paper they still have a chance. the Asian Championships next month in Vietnam is very important here. because if you don't qualify directly. there is a chance for continental gold medalists to qualify if they are good in the ranking but I don't go into the details. that's complicated
I wrote this about our chance in Karate 5 months ago. but I have to say I was very wrong about our girls in Karate. 5 months ago they were barely in top 20

but we got some great results since then. there are still 5 more events left (actually 8 but 5 of them matter more) but if the qualification was today Iran could qualify 5 !
our Olympic quota in 75kg and +75kg are pretty much safe. beside that now we have a chance to qualify a full team in women's kumite. Iran is in good position in all 3 weights.

55kg: Sara Bahmanyar came from nowhere and won 2 Karate-1 events in a row. she will be 4th in the WR when they announce the new ranking end of the month. we also have Taravat Khaksar in this weight. she will be 6th if I'm not wrong.
61kg: Rozita Alipour just won the gold medal in Russia K1 event today and will climb the ranking to the 5th place. even if she doesn't qualify directly she still has a good chance to qualify as the best ranked Asian female athlete.
+61kg: Hamideh Abbasali won medal in 5 events in a row . she failed to medal today but still a 5th place finish will keep her in top 4.

while we are in a good situation right now but the gap is very small and they have to be careful in remaining events. I think we almost guaranteed 1 quota because at least one of these girls will win the Asian quota but if 2 of them can stay in top 4, the 3rd girl will receive the Asian quota and we can have a full team. right now Bahmanyar and Abbasali are in top 4 and Alipour wins the Asian quota. Alipour herself also has a good chance to reach the top 4. I think among these 3 weights. Hamideh Abbasali are more in danger.

I'm not going into details but in some crazy situations there is a chance for our 67kg athletes to qualify as the best ranked Asian athlete but that's a long shot. even winning 5 out of 6 possible Kumite quotas will be a HUGE achievement . no other country is capable of that. I believe in Karate winning the quota means more than 50% chance of medal in Tokyo.

Thanks. Yes, I was going to write about that yesterday. Our Karate is in a very good form at the moment. 3 gold medals yesterday at world karate 1 tournament and 2 of them from our girls.

20 years old Sara Bahmanyar has really impressed me. Second karate 1 gold medal in a row. I think she may be our number 1 contender for a female Olympic medal next year.

Bahmanyar is doing great, in this sport this is really hard to win back to back tournaments. but we have to keep in mind if she qualifies she has to compete with athletes from 55kg. (her original weight is 50kg) that's a different competition. changing weight isn't always easy (look at Amir Mehdizadeh and his poor results in 67kg) and she looks small for 55kg.

of course body weight is not as important as wrestling for example but still when you are smaller, you are also shorter which gives more chance to your opponent. but for example Ganjzadeh is shorter than all of his rivals and that didn't stop him from becoming the World Champion.

                    A bit about Gymnastics

we had World Championships in Germany as the main qualification event in this sport. our main chance was Saeid Keikha and unfortunately he fell from the pommel horse and missed his chance. we had a good result in another athlete Mehdi Ahmadkohani, he finished 11th in Rings, which is a very good result but still a bit short of the Olympic qualification. he had to be in top 8.

Keikha was important for me because believe it or not he had a small chance even for an Olympic medal. there are still 3 more ways to qualify but 2 of them are only good for all-arounders , Keikha is specialist in Pommel Horse and can't do well in all 6 events.
there is one last chance for Keikha. World Cup series. the best ranked athlete qualifies in each event. Keikha is currently 4th but when they remove the athletes who already qualified here he will go to the 2nd place. I think he will finish 3rd eventually behind someone from China and Japan. there is nothing much he can do about it. I doubt he can improve his ranking. but since NOCs are limited to only 1 in 6 events. Keikha only can wish China (and maybe Japan) qualifies another athlete in another apparatus and then this quota goes to him. that's possible but there is nothing we can do about it.

World Cup is consisted of 8 events. 4 of them already done, they will consider 3 best results for each athlete. Keikha already has 3 good results that's why I don't think he can't improve his score. his score is already good and he needs GREAT results to improve from here.

the last and only time we had a Gymnast at the Olympics was 1964 and there was no qualification at the time (everybody could participate) I was hoping for a return after 56 years. the chance is very slim now but you always can hope.

Damn. I didn't expect Keikha not to even qualify. Let's hope he can go through rankings.

Just read that Saeid Ali Hosseini has 100% missed the Olympics. Such a pity.
His wish was to retire with an Olympic medal and he could have gotten the easiest Olympic silver possible but missed it due to neglecting the deadlines.

imagine you are an athlete in a sport like Gymnastics in Iran (which nobody cares about) and you know your only chance to do something is to make it to the final of a World Championship (and therefore qualify for the Olympics) and your whole career depends on just 1 minute of performance in a tricky apparatus like Pommel Horse. to be honest I was expecting him to fall. this is too much pressure to handle.

I hope he qualifies by a miracle. he really deserves it.

I'm sure nobody expects Iran to qualify in women's 3x3 basketball, this is a small tournament with only 8 teams ! but guess what, Iran actually has a good chance to qualify !

the end of the qualification period is 1 November and right now Iran is 6th
                              https://fiba3x3.com/en/rankings/federation.html#women

top 4 qualify directly for the Olympics but max 2 for each continent and since we have 3 European teams above Iran, all Iran has to do is to surpass Mongolia in the ranking. Iran is 6th the moment when I'm writing this but this ranking changes daily.

but the thing is, Iran is no way near the 6th team in the world, and Mongolia isn't close to be 5th ! both countries (and many other countries like Romania, Taiwan etc) found a bug in the ranking system and they are using it to collect more points. they are having lots of local women's 3x3 events in Iran these days. day and night to collect more points. 2 days ago Iran was 500,000pts behind Mongolia. now it's less than 300,000. with 20 more days to go if they continue like that they can qualify. btu of course Mongolia is also doing the same. it's a battle of who organizes more tournament inside the country !

this is not something to be proud of to be honest, our team doesn't "technically' deserve to be at the Olympics but they are trying their best "this way" to qualify. we will know the final result in 20 days. I only want them to qualify because it will develop women's basketball in Iran, nothing else. they will lose all the games in Tokyo.

No it won't be the worst. But it will be worse than 2012 and 2016 OG.

Beijing 2008 was a total disgrace for Iran, one Gold and one Bronze.

In pre Revolution period, worst OG for Iran were 1948 London, 1964 Tokyo, 1972 Munich and 1976 Montreal.

The OG just after war such as 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona were also bad.

But in my opinion the worst ever was 1976 Montreal followed by Beijing 2008 (there should be no excuse for poor olympic performance in those two) Iran had large team in both and financially Iran was doing well in both 2008 and 1976. Political situation had minimal effect on Iran's performance.

1996 Atlanta, 2004 Athens, 2012 London and 2016 Rio Iran would have done better if referees were fair.
