Asian weightlifting championship is going on in Uzbekistan this week. It is a gold standard tournament for Olympic qualification and since some of our best lifters have failed to gain enough points in previous qualifications due to injury or no lifts, they needed big results here. Rostami needed 395 kilos to have a chance but lifted 20 kilos less. He has failed time after time since he stopped training with the team and he doesn't even know which lifts to pick properly. Look at today's lifts, instead of increasing lifts by 4 or 5 kilos each time he suddenly adds 10 kilos to try to break records and fails. His arrogance prevented him from progressing in the past few years.

Today's full competition for men's 89kg. Notice his nagging at 1:45:40

Sohrab Moradi also lifts 20 kilos less than needed. Our two gold medallists in 2016 are out...

Why have our weightlifters fallen so poorly?
And why have they turned into such stubborn fools?
Are any of them any good now? Do we have any Olympic medal hopes in weightlifting?

Im no expert but it seems in weightlifting/wrestling type sports there really is a short window of time you are at the top.

Moradi is 32, dealt with some bad injuries, and unfortunately is not in the same form as younger guys like tian tao, qatari kid meso. It has less to do with falling poorly than just the effects of a very body taxing sport + aging. He was at his peak in rio and beat the aforementioned guys, and did similarly in 2017,2018 worlds.

Same way a young hassan yazdani upset an older great in geduev in olympics to win gold last time.

Adding to what inarsenewetrust said, the new Olympic qualification system has hurt us badly. Someone who misses a couple of those 6 month windows is basically out of chance. I mean Moradi would be a certain Olympic medallist if we had qualified. His only rivals are Tian Tao and the Qatari who have lost to him many times before.
Our coaching/training is not great either. 3 of our lifters have got injured during the Asian competition this week! Back in the days we had good coaches like Kurosh Bagheri and Hossein Tavakoli.

There is one very last chance for both of them in Colombia in 3 weeks time if the federation decides to send them. But given the long flight, jet lag and the fact that you can't really reach your prime twice within a month I wouldn't count much on it.

Regarding Olympic medal, we can get a silver in heavyweight if we don't screw it up. Gold is already guaranteed for Talakhadze but Ali Davoudi has qualified and should medal behind him.

Yazdani went untouched through the QF, SF, and final match to win the Asian Championship. Beast.

After winning 2016 gold Rostami went on some silly CrossFit regime and he’s suffered for it. It’s his own fault

                    Some news:

Unfortunately our Greco-roman team will go to the Olympics incomplete. Yesterday we lost the chance to get the 87kg quota as Naser Alizadeh lost in the quarter final of world qualification tournament. Nouri really messed up losing to a nobody Chinese in the Asian qualifiers.

In the past month we have qualified a few more athletes. Sara Bahmanyar in Women's −55 kg Karate qualified last week in the final Karate 1 tournament. We have qualified 4/6 and still have a chance to qualify the other 2. Nima Alamian qualified in table tennis, his brother Noshad has a slim chance to qualify through rankings. We also got one quota in rowing and another in Canoeing but obviously no medal chance.

Kimia Alizadeh who is part of refugee team lost in the semi-final of European qualification and will miss the Olympics. She was 1 win away. From our 8 medallists in Rio only 1 has qualified (Yazdani), and 1 still has a very slim chance (Sohrab Moradi)!

Finally the stupid world weightlifting federation has suddenly decided to change the qualification rules 2 months before the games making our slim chance for +96kg even slimmer. Suddenly they have decided to count 4 events instead of 6 so Sohrab and Kianoush have gone even lower in ranking. Kianoush has decided not to go to the final chance tournament in Colombia so he is 100% out, Sohrab has flown to Colombia but needs around 400kg total to have a chance to become best Asian lifter in the rankings.

Sohrab Moradi got injured when doing 2nd snatch attempt at the last chance Olympic qualifier yesterday. Poor guy went all the way to Columbia in these conditions for nothing. No gold medal in weightlifting this year.

Yesterday Nahid Kiani won us a quota for female Taekwondo by reaching Asian qualification final. She has a slim shot for a bronze in Tokyo.
The day before that 18 year old Mahla Momenzadeh lost in the semi-final and failed to qualify.
For the 4th Olympic in a row we will go to the Olympics with 1 female Taekwondo athlete.

We had already qualified 2 male Taekwondo athletes through ranking, both of whom have a strong medal chance in Tokyo.

I guess we will send 62 athletes at the Olympics

Our women basketball (3 x 3) are currently playing the Olympics qualification tournament. Unfortunately they lost badly to Japan (22/4) and narrowly against Thailand (21/20).last game against Ukraine

There is alot of pressure in Japan now to cancel the Olympics. Japan has a less than 3% vaccination rate for the COVID vaccines.

Do you all think the Olympics will happen?
