Official statement from United World Wrestling re: Iranian wrestlers and Albanian visa denial

CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (October 22) -- United World Wrestling expresses its deep disappointment to announce that Team Iran after sudden diplomatic crisis has been denied visas by Albania for the U23 World Championships in Tirana, scheduled to take place from October 23 to 29.

Both the Albanian Wrestling Federation and UWW worked tirelessly to facilitate the necessary visa issuance for all participating teams, including the Iranian wrestlers. Despite the efforts, the authorities denied Team Iran its right to participate in the tournament.

UWW stands with all wrestlers and remains committed to making the sport inclusive to every country and will take a more in-depth look at the matter going forward.

I've been thinking about the U23 World Championships in Albania that started a couple of days ago, without our young and promising wrestlers.

What was done to our athletes is actually worse than what was done to Russian athletes (both of which are terrible examples of politics in sports). While the Russian *federation* was banned from this competition, our *individual* athletes were banned unilaterally. Russian athletes may still compete as AIN (unaffiliated neutral athletes) with all the experience that comes with competing on the highest level, but our athletes are specifically and individually banned from competing under any circumstance (as they could not enter Albania, period). This loss of experience and growth for our athletes in a crucial point in their career development is irreversible and can not be replaced/regained in any manner. This is as close to a sports crime, if there ever was one.

Well if Russia is officially banned (in theory but not in practical terms) and iran unofficially banned (at least in this case) what is left of UWW? If UWW have any sense of self-preservation they will never let that beggar country host anything again. Im surprised at the level of incompetence from UWW. But then again they almost got wrestling knocked off olympics so I shouldnt be surprised.

I understand that they want to extend the sport to parts of the world were wrestling isnt popular to gain traction. But still ... they are bad at exactly everything. At least hos wrestling tournaments in india or china where people actually can pick up wrestling. Without Iran and Russia wrestling as a sport will be dead and US athletes will lose motivation. UWW needs Iran more than Iran needs UWW and our cowards in charge in Iran need to play on this.
