Queen's Gambit, world chess rankings, and Alireza Firouzja

Since watching the Queen's Gambit on Netflix (highly recommend it, even if you're not a chess fan), I started looking into the current world chess rankings.

Turns out, Alireza Firouzja is a hot shot! He is the only teenager in the top 25 (at age 17, ranked #17). This year, he came in second in the World Rapid Chess tournament, only behind the current #1 ranked player Magnus Carlson from Norway. He is from Babol, and currently lives in France. Alireza Shireh!

I’ve follows him closely over the last couple of years. He’s very strong in rapid chess..... unfortunately he is no longer representing Iran due to internal pressure from IR.

Update on Alireza:

Firouzja's trajectory continued to shoot up in 2021, when he won the Riga Grand Swiss, scored 8/9 and the European Team Championships, and skyrocketed to #2 in the world rankings with a 2804 rating. His Grand Swiss victory qualified Firouzja for the 2022 Candidates Tournament at the age of 18, one of the youngest ever to achieve that feat, and Firouzja also broke the record for youngest player to surpass a 2800 rating.
