    Post Olympics Discussion

Guys, ready for an analysis of our performance this time and Olympics in general? Remember this was not normal without the fans and all the tough mask rules in Japan, which makes it all more difficult for any athlete.

I will later come up with an analysis. Would be happy to read from you guys as well.

The Tokyo Olympics for Iran finished with 7 medals, three of which were Gold. Two silver and two Bronze.

Better than the Rio Olympics. Not better than the London Olympics.

I spent some time looking at the overall medal table. If I had time, I could write a book about it. For example, Bahrain in 79 position has a silver medal from an Eitopian. Several other countries such as Azerbaijan have zero gold, but some silver medals, even so in 67 medal positions.

Iran ranked 27 out of 93 countries. Because of COVID or financial reasons, about 40 countries did not participate.

Japanese lost money in this Olympics and held it so thank you to them.

As a sports person, I enjoyed it. The Men Beach Volleyball between Russia (ROC) and Norway was exciting to watch. Qatar with a Senegalese and Gambian won Bronze. I am not for naturalizing different nationalities but there are some things to be said.

Definitely, your analysis should talk about politics that some of our athletes choose to fight under Olympics flag and some like Moalaee won a silver for another country.

Fans support. We need to support our athletes beyond saying congratulations at this or similar sport sites.

Every olympics it’s mentioned but if Iran wants to be top 10 in medals —they need to invest in sports where Tons of medals are given
      -swimming
      -track and field
And strengthen our traditional sports in which we always medal
      -weightlifting
      -wrestling
      -martial arts
We have the population pool and talent to do this.

Alright guys, it is difficult really to Analyse this whole thing. So many mixed emotions.
        Lets start with the positive:
        1. Gold in Shooting. That one was rather unexpected and it can be seen as an inspiration now to look more into this sport. It is relatively easy to train more athletes for and win more medals. Also the women have a good opportunity here. I feel it is a sport where we can be among the best and this Gold is the start to that.
Who would have expected a Gold outside of Wrestling, Weightlifting, and Taekwondo? Historic guys!!!!
        2. Fencing. Yes, we ended without a medal, but without this suspect ref decisions, we cold have win medals. Look at Pakdamaan comments please. I think this sport suits us well and it can be exiting. But we need right investment here, right preparation, mental strength, and this sport needs more neutral referees. The thing is this happened to Abedini in Rio already and now the whole team. It needs to be like wrestling where this suspect ref decisions have largely stopped.
        3. Karate. No surprise here, know we are among the best of the world. Just sad that it will not be included in Paris. The Gold was great, especially against a Saudi. The female athletes, especially Abbasali was unlucky with her injuries, but Karate is very tough and unexpected. You need a bit of luck here. But both the Kumite and Kata were entertaining.
        Now the negative:
        1. Taekwondo. Total downfall here. Not even close to a medal anymore. Whats going on here? Have not followed much, but the Alizadeh Hashiyeh did not make things better. Bad performance here and this needs to be highlighted.
        2. Weightlifting. All the doping cases (also Iran) made the sport less and less important. Prestige is totally down and who knows if this even will be included in Paris. Just sad what happened to this nice sport. One of the oldest sports in the world...shame. Hashemi had wrong tactics, could have get bronze if he was more careful with the weights. Davoudi was very good.
        3. Judo. No Comment.
        4. Volleyball. Kind of disappointing, but not a big surprise. We still are far away from getting a medal in a group sport.
        Mixed results:
Wrestling. Many good and young wrestlers going int he future. Zare, Saravi, and Mirzazadeh all very good. They were strong and Mirzazadeh was unlucky facing both Lopez and Kaylap.
Yazdani: We all love him. He was great as usual. Tough final, was in lead...this can happen. It was different 2016 in Rio for him (6:6) in last 10 sec, this time in last 18 sec he lost. Hope he can make it up in the World Champs.
Geraei: Surprise win! Excellent and smart wrestling by him. Totally dominated his opponent in the final!
However, some of the freestyle wrestling was not great. We should consider other options here for the World Champs.
        Female athletes:
Lot of gheyrat they showed. We need more investment here and make them mentally stronger.
        Going forward:
Futsal and Beachvolleyball would be nice to have. More medal chances. Karate too and perhaps Wushu (we are the best of the world after China).

IOC could cut down more in weightlifting and wrestling, so shooting, fencing should be alternatives. swimming is tough for now and not popular among people.
This is for now my take.

            @Ab Gosht
IOC is strange. Why no Futsal, Beachsoccer, or Wushu, but tons of swimming? To make it easier for white boys to grab medals lol.
Also, we doped much less than Russians or Turks, but we were punished hard in weightlifting. Also, IOC has more Judo included than wrestling. Also benefits Japan (on purpose likely).

You can't ask more from an Olympic team that comes from a country where the government literally doesn't give a shit about its athletes.

The prob is the IOC is likely going to kill 2 of the following three...Wrestling, Weightlifting, and Karate. All of these sports are on the fence with weightlifting credibility completely out the door due to doping. Iran needs to diversify its sports if it ever wants to be top 10. Even Canada with its huge volume of athletes doesn't break top 10.

Iran really needs to invest in finding talent and training religious minorities, Afro-Irani, Bandari, Baluch, Turkmen & Kazakh (from Golestan province). These ethnic-religious minorities can fill up the gaps, some of them are well suited to some sports in comparison to other Iranians eg. Athletics, Gymnastics, Boxing, Equestrian. Iranians should really push for the authorities to allow non-Muslim Iranian women ie. Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, Mandaeans and others to participate in sports without Hijab. Their participation will give Iran advantage in having representation in sports where currently Iran has no females participating eg. Boxing, Gymnastics, Swimming, Wrestling, Weightlifting, Fencing, some Track and Field events. Being non-Muslims means they can easily participate without Hijab and there will be no dramas! In Iran they participate in women's only venues anyway. I truly hope influencial Iranians can get public/authorities approval for this to happen.

My prediction before the games was 1 gold, 2 silvers and 4 bronze. I got the number of medals right but obviously we did better than my expectation!

The bright spots were definitely Foroughi and Geraei Jr. Volleyball, Taekwondo and wrestling otherwise were disappointing. We didn't cause any upsets and our athletes lost to those that were ranked higher than them in combat sports. Referee biases as usual were there too, the one in fencing in particular was painful.

I am happy for Mollaei and Kimia and sad at the same time that situations have forced them out of their homeland.

I expect a better performance overall in Paris. We have a great generation of Greco guys coming up and we should be hopefully getting more Taekwondo and Weightlifting quotas by then.

I agree 100%—if/when they eliminate weightlifting/wrestling from the Olympics-Iran will barely get a medal or two unless it diversifies its Olympic sports programs. I mean are their even swimming academies/programs in Iran?

It would be disgusting by IOC to ban Wrestling, perhaps the oldest sport of the world. Even Weightlifting would be insane to ban.

Agree, but they had discussed it before —years ago if I remember it took all the wrestling powerhouses -Iran, USA, Russia, Turkey, etc., to come together to fight it, which they successfully did. IOC is trying to put new gen “sports” in—at the expense of classical/traditional Olympic sports
