PFDC – GELSENKIRCHEN, Shortly afer the transfer of Iranian playmaker Ali Karimi to Schalke 04, coach Felix Magath explained to reporters, why he signed the 32-year-old.

“I am happy that we can add another experienced player to the squad until the end of the season”, Magath is quoted on bi-weekly sports magazine ‘kicker’s’ homepage.

“We currently have problems transferring the game from midfield to attack.

“Karimi is a very good football player and will be able to help us in this regard.”

Magath was also quick to point out that the signing of the former Bayern Munich man involves “no financial risk”.

Ali Karimi, who according to ‘kicker’ will probably mainly be used as joker, was a free agent after being released from Iranian club Steel Azin following quarrels with coaches and club officials.

The 2004 Asian Footballer of the Year, who was left out of Iran’s Asian Cup squad, will be awarded number 10 at Schalke.

Schalke 04 were in need of new options in midfield after playmaker Ivan Rakitic’s departure to FC Sevilla.

The Champions League participants also signed midfielders Anthony Annan and Danilo Avelar as well as striker Angelo Charisteas.
