PFDC – TEHRAN, Former Real Madrid boss Carlos Queiroz is close to being revealed as Team Melli’s new headcoach. The 57-year-old is expected to sign a three-year-deal with the Iranian football Federation still this week.

Queiroz, who is known as longtime assistant coach of Alex Ferguson at Manchester United was released as Portugal headcoach after a disappointing start into Euro 2012 qualification in 2010.

Earlier that year, Queiroz had led unbeaten Portugal to the knockout stage from a group with Brazil, Ivory Coast and DPR Korea. However, Portgual was then eliminated by later World Champions Spain after a 1-0 defeat.

It had been Queiroz’s second spell as Portugal boss already after 1991-1993.

The far-travelled physical education degree holder also coached clubsides Sporting Lisbon, the NY Metro Stars and Nagoya Grampus Eight as well as the national teams of the UAE and South Africa.

Iran are without a coach since being eliminated in quarterfinals of Asian Cup on January 22 and Afshin Ghotbi’s departure to Shimizu S-Pulse.

Beside Queiroz, Frenchman Roger Lemerre is also reportedly on IFF’s wishlist.
