queiroz_actionMNA – TEHRAN, The former Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz is most likely to become the new head coach of Iran football team.

After arriving in Tehran on Monday night, the 57-year-old said, “I am happy to be here. I am negotiating with the Iranian football officials but I have to stress there is nothing concrete.”

“I’ve seen Iran’s performance in the Asian Cup in Doha and I know Iran has many talented players. Now, I want to know what their expectations are,” he said.

Queiroz has not been in any team since he was axed by the Portuguese Football Federation last September after the poor start in the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

The former Real Madrid coach is understood to have held talks with Iranian Football Federation (IFF) president Ali Kaffashian in Tehran, with reports indicating he has been offered a three-year contract worth $6 million.

Iran is scheduled to play a friendly against Russia at the Sheikh Zayed Sports City in the UAE on Wednesday and Queiroz will watch the match from the seats.

The much-travelled Queiroz will bring a wealth of experience to the role having been manager of the United Arab Emirates and South Africa amongst others during a 20-year coaching career.
