Mazloomi: we’re down but not out
Second-half goals from Omar Sulamani and Saad Al Haarthi saw Al Nassr fight back from a goal down to overcome Esteghlal 2-1 at King Fahd International Stadium, Soheil Omranzadeh having headed the visitors in front.
And Mazloomi said: “We didn’t deserve to lose. Esteghlal kept the pressure on, but we were unable to prevent the loss.
“We were caught off by guard when we conceded the first goal from a long drive and their second goal came from a free-kick where unfortunately the defensive wall wasn’t tight enough. I would like to extend my congratulations to Al Nassr for their victory tonight, though I believe a draw would be fairer.
“Al Nassr were playing home and we could feel the positive impact of the spectators on the game.
“But my team effectively stopped their key players functioning well and if my player (Omranzadeh) hadn’t missed the chance in the dying minutes, the result would have been different now.
“We still have some chances. There are four games left meaning that 12 points are still there. Rest assured, Esteghlal will make it to the next round.”
Opposite number Dragan Skocic was delighted as his side adapted to the differing demands of the competition to record their first victory in Group B.
“I am satisfied with the game and its result and I am glad we won the game,” said Skocic.
“We could have scores more goals in the final minutes, but two were enough to win this game. The victory and the three points were much worthier than the two goals.
“Our previous game was a tough match against the Uzbeks. You need to be strong and fit against Pakhtakor, but in this game you need to be skilful to play against Esteghlal.
“Every team has its own weaknesses; even the best teams in the world may have problems. That’s why you even see Barcelona losing some games.”
