Loading...PFDC – GELSENKIRCHEN, Schalke got a reality check in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal, suffering a well deserved 0-2 home defeat to superb Manchester United Tuesday evening.
Schalke coach Ralf Ragnick had opted for an offensive minded 4-4-2 with playmaker Jurado in central midfield, but Schalke could only react to Manchester’s superior attacking football from the beginning.
With Charisteas, Draxler and Ali Karimi, who again made the 18-men-squad despite two fixed players returning from injury, Ragnick had some offensive options on the bench, however, decided to introduce defensive midfielder instead of side midfielder Baumjohann early in second half.
Soon afterwards the visitor’s finally broke the deadlock when an excellent Rooney throughball found Giggs, who eventually curled the ball past Neuer (67′).
Only three minutes later Rooney himself doubled the lead after an excellent pass by Hernandez.
Leftback Escudero’s and winger Draxler’s introduction to the game meant Karimi would not get his overall seventh Champions League appearance this time and must hope for a final shot in Manchester next Wednesday.
