Esteghlal fans set record in AFC Champions League
TEHRAN, May 13 (MNA) — Fans of Esteghlal have set a new record in the 2011 AFC Champions League group stage.
More than 85,000 spectators watched Esteghlal match against Al Nasr of Saudi Arabia in Group B Match Day 6 in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium, AFC reported.
The AFC Champions League 2011 attendance figure after the group stage stands just shy of the one million mark.
A total of 995,133 spectators watched the 96 group stage games played across the 12 countries where the continent’s top club tournament was played. This gives an average of 10,365 per game.
The last match day saw the attendance spike up dramatically as more than 85,000 fans turned up to see Iran’s Esteghlal defeat Al Nassr 2-1 at the Azadi Stadium. Though the win pulled Esteghlal level with the Saudis on the head-to-head record they failed to make it through to the Round of 16 because of an inferior goals record.
The second best watched match on the final day of action was the Al Hilal versus Al Gharafa encounter at the King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh. The home side easily defeated Qataris Al Gharafa 2-0, setting up a mouthwatering all-Saudi encounter with archrivals Al Ittihad of Jeddah.
