Mohammed Bin Hammam fails in appeal
GOAL – LAUSANNE, Former Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Mohamed Bin Hammam has lost an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to block the appointment of a successor to his role.
Bin Hammam was provisionally banned from all football activities after becoming embroiled in a corruption scandal before Fifa made the decision permanent in September, with Zhang Jilong named as acting president. But Bin Hammam sought to stop the Chinese executive from getting the role permanently.
“On September 30, 2011, the Court of Arbitration for Spor in Lausanne rejected an appeal on provisional measures filed by Mohamed Bin Hammam on August 19 2011 against the Asian Football Confederation,” an AFC statement read. “The CAS decision to dismiss Mr Bin Hammam’s request for a provisional stay is a procedural order and not an away, meaning that it is not subject to further appeal.”
Bin Hammam had hoped to become Fifa president, but was ruled responsible for cash gifts worth around €720,000 and swiftly received his ban.
