Persepolis sign Irish topscorer [VIDEO]
PFDC – TEHRAN, Persepolis Tehran have signed Irish-Libyan striker Eamon Zayed from Derry City.
The 28-year-old, who signed a six-month deal, scored 22 goals for Derry in Ireland’s premier division last season, making him the league’s topscorer
Zayed was also recently selected as the 2011 ‘Player of the Year’ by the ‘Professional Footballers’ Association of Ireland’ (PFAI).
The 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in) tall striker, who would have been eligible to play for the national teams of Ireland, Tunisia or Libya, finally debuted for the latter in 2010, and collected four caps so far but is still waiting for his first international goal.
He is expected to make Libya’s 23-men squad for the Africa Cup of Nations 2012 in January.
Before joining Derry City, Zayed played for numerous Irish clubs since 2002, scoring 95 goals in total.
Persepolis FC are in disappoiting ninth position of the domestic league and were looking for a target striker.
The Tehran giants will participate in the 2012 Asian Champions League as 2011 Iranian Hazfi Cup winners and are about to sign Mustafa Denizli as their new coach.
