WAFF Championship 2012 set for November
PFDC – AMMAN, The 2012 WAFF Championship for men’s national football teams will take place in Kuwait City between November 20 and December 23 2012, the West Asian Football Federation announced on Monday.
The invitations for the sixth edition of the WAFF Championship have been sent to the 13 member associations, who have time to confirm their participation until January 21.
Iran, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Qatar, UAE, Yemen, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia are part of the WAFF, however, the tournament with the highest participation so far took place in 2010, when nine teams competed in the tourney.
Current title holders are Kuwait, who defeated four-time winners Iran (2000, 2004, 2007, 2008) 2-1 in the final in Amman in 2010. In 2002, Iraq won the competition.
The WAFF tournament is meanwhile played every two years and the member associations mostly send ull senior national teams, however, often without legionnairs because of the games taking place outside the FIFA calendar. The games nevertheless count as official FIFA A matches.
