Osasuna miss chance to enter European stage
PFDC – SANTANDER, Basque side CA Osasuna defeated bottom-placed club Racing Santander in the 38th and final round of La Liga on Sunday evening.
Mendilibar’s men celebrated a 4-2 victory over already relegated Racing at Santander’s Campos de Sport de El Sardinero stadium.
Osasuna fell behind early two minutes after kickoff by a goal from Stuani. The Basque visitors scored the equalizer in the 54th minute by Ibrahima Balde.
Cejudo (68′) and Raul Garcia (72′) extended the lead for Osasuna, who still had hopes to play in the next edition of the Europa League. Osasuna’s Roversio finished the job in the 90th minute, after Santander had scored their second goal by Jairo (81′) and had been even close to score the equalizer.
Osasuna stayed, nevertheless, on the sensational 7th position and missed the International spots by only one point, as UD Levante trashed this year’s Europa League finalist Athletic Bilbao 3-0 at home and therefore secured the 6th position.
The Iranian international Javad Nekounam, (31) played the full 90 minutes and displayed a solid performance. Masoud Shojaei (27) is still sidelined due to a training deficit as a result of a heavy injury.
