TEHRAN TIMES – TEHRAN, Iran football players have officially apologized to the home fans for losing a 2014 World Cup qualifier to Lebanon.

Iran lost to Lebanon 1-0 in Beirut on September 11 in Group A.

The second place Iran is scheduled to play group leader South Korea on October 16 in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.

The Iranian players have appealed to the fans to get behind them against Koreans.

“We are so disappointed due to an unexpected defeat against Lebanon. All players and staff did their best against Lebanon and according to those who saw the match, Iran didn’t deserve to lose. We had to get three points and it’s so hard to believe the defeat after three weeks.

“We lost to Lebanon but we were not shortchanging and we are not irresponsible. We are the soldiers who have earned respect from you (people). We are so sorry because of the result against Lebanon and apologize to all the fans, who have supported us and we hope that get good results in the upcoming matches.

“Iran has two must-win matches against South Korea and Uzbekistan in Tehran and winning of these important matches will pave the way to qualify for the World Cup. As President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said everyone should help create a calm atmosphere and (an atmosphere) full of confidence, passion, and motivation to help the team.

“We want the fans to support us against South Korea and Uzbekistan. We can get result if our fans are behind us. Iran will not book a berth in the World Cup unless the people back their national team in the competitions.”
