Iran might play Algeria in friendly
Tehran Times – TEHRAN, Iran will likely play Algeria football team in a friendly, UN Resident Coordinator Gary Lewis said.
Iran was scheduled to face Gabon in a training camp in Lisbon in September as well as a friendly against Sporting Lisbon but the camp was cancelled due to lack of funds.
“I am trying to arrange a friendly match between Iran and Algeria since I am in touch with the country’s officials. The African powerhouse will play Iran if the team books a berth in the 2014 World Cup,” Gary Lewis said in Tehran’s Hoveyzeh Hotel on Saturday.
Algeria will host Burkina Faso on Tuesday in a World Cup qualifier.
Iran has already played Algeria twice. The Iranian team beat Algeria 2-1 in the first leg of the Afro-Asian Cup of Nations in September 1991 in Tehran and lost to the team 1-0 in Algiers in October.
Iran qualified for the 2014 World Cup after beating South Korea 1-0 in June. The victory saw Iran reach football’s premier competition for the fourth time in its history, having previously played in the first round of the 1978, 1998 and 2006 tournaments.
