Mashhad Derby ends in draw
Persianfootball.com – MASHHAD, The derby of Iran’s second largest city, also ends in draw just like the Tehran derby, with only difference being that actually, there were goals scored in this match.
Saturday, January 18, Samen Stadium was the venue for the Mashhad Derby between Padideh Shandiz and Siahjamegan Khorasan. This match was part of Week 16 of the Azadegan League Group A clash.
Padideh took the lead with Mehrdad Avakh’s 18th minute goal, whilst Siahjamegan scored in injury time, with Rouhollah Bagheri’s 92nd minute goal.
Padideh on 26 points remains on top of Group A, whilst Siahjamegan is in 3rd place with 22 points.
Traditional Mashhad Derby used to be played between Aboumoslem and Payam football clubs, and dates back to the early 1980s. The derby used to be Iran’s second most important derby until the early 90s. The two played each other twice in 2008-09 Season of Persian Gulf Cup(Iranian Pro League).
Payam is no longer active, however there is a newly founded team called Payam Vahdat Khorasan that currently plays in Second Division.
On the other hand, Aboumoslem currently plays in Azadegan League’s Group B. However has been experiencing financial difficulties and remains 12th in the table which could mean relegation to Second Division if she fails to better her position in the table. The legendary Khodadad Azizi is Technical Director of Aboumoslem.
