Iran finishes 2nd in AFC Futsal Championship

Tasnim – HO CHI MINH CITY, Iran lost to Japan in the final match of the AFC Futsal Championship on Saturday.

In the match held at the Phu Tho Gymnasium, Ho Chi Minh City, Iran lost to Japan in penalty shoot-out.

The match finished 2-2 at the end of normal time.

Vahid Shafiei put the Iranian futsal team into the lead in the 8th minute. Kotaro Inaba equalized the match with four minutes remaining in the first half.

Hossein Tayyebi gave the 10-time champion a lead once again two minutes into the extra time but with just three minutes left, Iran’s Hamid Ahmadi scored an own goal.

In penalty shoot-out, Yushi Sekiguchi saved three penalties from Mohammad Taheri, Ghodrat Bahadori and Asghar Hassanzadeh. Kazuhiro Nibuya, Tomoki Yoshikawa and Akira Minamoto converted their penalties and Japan retained the AFC Futsal Championship title.

In the bronze-medal match, Uzbekistan beat Kuwait 2-1.
