Tehran Times – SALVADOR, Vancouver Whitecaps defender Steven Beitashour believes that Iran played well against Argentina and surprised the world with its incredible performance.

Iran lost to Argentina 1-0 in Group F of the 2014 World Cup but had a couple of chances against the tournament’s favorite.

“We played well for 90 minutes but unfortunately at the end we conceded a late goal that was really disappointing. I think with this performance we surprised Argentina and the world a little bit right there” Beitashour told Tehran Times correspondent in Salvador.

“Obviously Messi is a great player. He creates the chance out of nothing. It is one of those tough things that you fought for a long time and you have to concentrate beyond the 90 minutes even during the injury time and Messi scored exactly in that time, that one really hurts,” he added.

Born in San Jose, Calif., to Iranian parents, Beitashour holds dual Iranian-American citizenship. He believes that Iran can qualify for the next round if they beat Bosnia in the final group game.

“We have to fight to beat Bosnia so we would have the chance to qualify”, Beitashour said.
