Frenz Indonesia football team bolstered by Iranian striker
The Star Online, Eric Samuel – PALEMBANG, Frenz Indonesia will be boosted by the presence of Iranian hotshot Reza Kerimi when they host Liverpool in the third Frenz International Cup (FIC) opening Group A match at the Stadium Gelora Sriwijaya here on Saturday.
The Iran Under-17 striker will provide the firepower in the Indonesians’ challenge which includes matches against Guangzhou Evergrande (China) and Feyenoord (Holland).
Frenz Indonesia coach Mohd Zahid Hashim said Reza who played in the last two FIC finals with Iran will give them the competitive edge in the Under-18 tournament.
The former Malaysian Armed Forces player said besides Reza, they have also bolstered the defence with another two Iranians Nima Dageshtani and Arash Ghafour.
“Frenz Indonesia is made up of three players from Iran, seven from Malaysia and 14 Indonesians.
“It is a unique set-up but with a common goal. The boys have everything going for them at the club to pursue their education as well as their ambition to turn pro.”
Frenz Indonesia and Frenz Malaysia are both based in Janda Baik, Pahang. The players from Iran were roped in last month.
“It is a pity our striker Ivan Hafila will be out after picking up a hamstring injury recently,” he said.
Izat Mukhlis will get to start with Reza upfront against Liverpool.
The last meeting against the English club was during the team’s playing tour of England in October last year.
They lost to Liverpool (2-1), Everton (5-2) and Blackburn (6-0).
