Iran’s Vahid Amiri apologizes for penalty miss
Tehran Times – CANBERRA, Iranian international midfielder Vahid Amiri apologized to his teammates and the fans after he missed a penalty against Iraq in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.
Team Iran, who was reduced to 10-man in the 43rd minute, twice came from behind in the quarter-final match and two Middle Eastern rivals finally finished all square at 3-3 at the end of extra-time.
The Iranian football team lost to Iraqi outfit 8-7 on the penalty shootout. Amiri hit the post, allowing Salman Shakir to slot to his right and secure Iraq’s progression.
“I missed the penalty and we lost. I still cannot believe that. I am the saddest person in Iran. I wanted to make my people happy, but it didn’t happen. I felt ashamed. Sorry,” the 27-year-old player told teamiran.net.
